Whoever you are or wherever in life you live, everybody faces hardship. The question is how people answer. Beowulf faces the same problem as we are today, which challenges his character in different forms. Beowulf's story has three main opponents: Grendel, his mother, and lastly the dragon. It is the hardships of life that Grendel, the mother of Grendel, and the dragon are portrayed. The challenges Beowulf faces throughout the story are strength, courage, and loyalty.

Grendel is Beowulf's first enemy and tests the bravery of Beowulf. It's also the beginning of Beowulf to become the next leader for his people to look up to. When Grendel hits the city ravages, people run, but Beowulf turns around and struggles without armor, even though many men have been dead for many years trying to kill the beast. The people's responses to Grendel attacks are like people confronting today's problems. Among the people, there are two choices, one to flee and one to confront/conquer. The one you choose plays an enormous role in your character and who you as a person are. So, that proves that hardships are not something from the past and that it’s something people still go through today.

Beowulf's second enemy is Grendel's mother, and for Beowulf, this was a tough battle. Grendel's mother destroyed the city and killed a man when she learned of the death of her son. Beowulf took the King's offer and defended the town and entered the fiery lake in the face of Grendel's mother. This shows how life often puts you in situations or positions you don't want to be in and can test your courage. If Grendel's mother and Beowulf start to fight in the water and other animals attempt to attack Beowulf. In the present day, people will sometimes try to do what you can to beat you down and discourage them.

Later on in life, the dragon is the final enemy that Beowulf faces and put his life on the line. This kind of hardship demonstrates also the true loyalty of his men. Beowulf was king when the dragon came to his city and his people, and when he learned of its destruction. Beowulf calls some of his men to support Beowulf and the city who had pledged their lives. Beowulf begins to lose the battle and is injured by the dragon. His men can see that easily only a challenge can even be losing the great Beowulf.

Beowulf is faced by many powers, is put in bad circumstances, and still had an impact on many lives. From this story, we understand that everyone reacts differently to difficulties, and some people are willing than others. Even if we don't overcome and gain anything from it, our strength may be even greater than our successes. That's was the goal Beowulf wanted.
