Esports is a kind of sport where a group of gamers compete against another group of gamers in order to win. Usually, the kind of games for Esports are multiplayer games such as Mobile Legends, PUBG Mobile, DOTA, and others. Video game is an electronic game that involves an interaction with a user interface or input device, such as controller, keyboard, or motion sensing devices, to create visual feedback on a two- or three-dimensional video display device such as a TV set. The common reason why people love to play video games is to avoid boredom because boredom can cause stress. To prevent this, people usually started to play random video games for their own entertainment. Video games cause negative effects like antisocial, aggressive/violent behavior, and mental disorders but it can also improve our thinking skills, help us to be able to cooperate with random people, and also as a mood booster.

According to layman’s terms from idtech.com, “playing video games directly affects and impacts regions of the brain responsible for memory, spatial orientation, information organizations, and fine motor skills. It showed that most research appears to show that video games do actually alter the brain and boosts their efficiency in certain aspects”. Usually, these kinds of games are single-player games because it usually contains puzzles. Although sometimes puzzles are stressful, it's those puzzles that helps us to improve our thinking skills.

According to a Joan Ganz Cooney Center survey on raisesmartkid.com, students have become better collaborators after using digital games in the classroom. Research also proves that playing cooperatively is way better than playing competitively because, according to ResearchGate, players who played Modern Warfare 3 scored way higher than players who played Modern Warfare 3 competitively. These kinds of multiplayer games enable us to be teaming up with random people. Although, people might think that these people didn’t work with each other because they did not know each other but in fact, these people work cooperatively. This, of course, proves us that video games can help us to be cooperative not only with friends, but with other people too.

A 2013 study by the American Psychological Association showed that short and simple games, like Angry Birds, can improve a person’s mood and make them happier. These kinds of games can relieve people’s stress and what happens when people are not stressed anymore? Their moods were boosted. How are their moods boosted? Simple, short games like these need a bit of focus and I believe that people can move their focus on video games more than their work when they get their hands on them. This, of course, helps people to not worry about their work for too much and after that? They completely got over it.

From all that positivity, games can still cause children to become more violent. There is a case from a kid named Daniel Petric, shot his mother, killed her, and wound his father because they won’t allow him to play Halo 3. From this case, we know that there are not only non-violent games, but there is also a violent one, lots even. These violent games can alter our mindset to become way more violent.

According to the WHO, there is some sort of disorder that is called gaming disorder which is a 'pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior' in which people lose control of their gaming behavior, give priority to gaming over other interests and activities, and continue gaming despite negative consequences, such as impairments in their family relationships, social lives, work duties or other areas. There are lots of cases of gaming disorder even in our country, one of them is called ‘Kids in Semarang Experienced Mental Disorder Because of Addiction’. According to Kompas, it happened because when the kids were asked to go to school, they didn’t want to instead they wanted to play games all day. This sort of thing fits the definition of gaming disorder where people prioritize their games rather than other stuff such as families, education, and others.

Other than that, video games can also cause other people to become antisocial. One of the proofs is that 4BT finds out that there is any truth to the statements that say the next generation would lack social skills. Not only children are addicted to video games, it is also reported that a huge percentage of adults rather play video games than attending social gathering. From this, we know that this kind of effect did not impact only on children, but on adults as well.

Of course, every action has effects, especially playing video games. Of course, these effects have two effects which are positive and negative effects. The positive effects are that video games can help us to improve our thinking skills, be cooperative, and it can also act as a mood booster while the negative effects are that video games can increase children’s violence, causing mental disorders, and make children and adults to become antisocial. To avoid the negative effects, I suggest that we stop playing violent video games and start playing games that contain educational content.
