Ready, set, go! I ran ahead of everyone and completed the first lap. I was extremely confident that I was going to win. But all of a sudden, as I approached the finish line, I felt a sharp pain in my right leg. I tried my best to limp the rest of the way. But alas, the pain was just unbearable. I fell down and couldn’t get up. I had never experienced such excruciating pain before. My friends helped me up and took me to a clinic, where I was told that I had pulled my right hip flexor. My entire world seemed to come crashing down. I was told that I was lucky since there was no tear in the muscle but at that moment, it just didn’t feel like it. This was a race that I could and should have won. But despite that, I had to return home empty-handed, without a medal.
I was disappointed by this failure, but I was determined to not feel ashamed of myself. I was not going to let this one incident define me. I made up my mind to do my best to get well as soon as possible and get back on the running track, which was much easier said than done. I had to undergo treatment for six months and had to rest well. I could not participate in any track and field events during the year and had to go through injury rehabilitation. After, I started training with my high school cross-team, but no matter how hard I tried I could not seem to keep up with the rest of the team. Shortly after this, I started to feel the pain reappear. I could not believe it. After all that work to make the pain go away, here I was, right where I started. The disappointment and pain together weakened me to the point where I didn’t want to face anyone. I tried hard to fight back the tears as I met my coach but I just couldn’t. It was too much. I felt so helpless and unable to understand why this was happening to me. Why couldn’t it be someone else? Why was I being punished like this?

A couple of months and many tests and doctor’s appointments later, I was told that I had to undergo right hip surgery. I was only a 15-year-old boy and the name of the surgery itself scared me. It was an extremely painful process after which I had to rest for six months.
However, I was still determined to not give up. I wanted to stand strong and do what I loved. I wanted to run as fast as I could and feel the wind on my face which made me feel invincible. Finally, a year and a half after the surgery I was deemed fit to get back into running. I ran in my first high school track meet and finished the race without breaking any track record or improving my personal record. However, I was satisfied. I was finally able to run without feeling any pain and the fact that I could do what I loved without having to undergo any pain was my biggest achievement.
Going through these hardships really taught me so much within the last couple of years. Trying and failing have become two of my important teachers. Failure taught me in ways success couldn`t. It made me realize that life is full of ups and downs and any hardship will pass. When I look back at how I overcame my hardship I feel proud of myself and thank god for giving me the strength to overcome the most difficult period in my life and to friends and family for support and encouragement. The painful surgery did not make me decide against what I wanted. I remained focused on my interests and was very determined not to give up. Sometimes hardships in life might make us feel that everything is over in our life. But when we see the example of great people we see that it has been a turning point to success. I believe, the weakest moments should be considered opportunities instead of limitations.
