The main protagonist of this story is a twelve-year-old boy named Miguel. Although his family banned music from their lives, this young boy still dreamed of to be part of a musician. The reason why their family banned the music into their lives was because his great-great-grandmother Imelda believed that her husband who was a musician left her and her daughter COCO in exchange for his career as a musician. Since then, Imelda decided to ban the music forever into their lives without even knowing what happened and start the shoemaking business.
Many years had passed. Coco was already old and she lived with her grandson which is Miguel together with Miguel's parents and all her Abuelita who were all shoemakers.

One day, Miguel accidentally destroys the picture frame that his great-great-grandmother kept for a very long period, the picture that will lead him to discover a man holding a guitar that looks the same as what Ernesto Dela Cruz had (Miguel's idol). Thinking that Ernesto was his late grandfather, Miguel decided to join The Day Of The Dead competition, he went to the tomb of Ernesto and tried to steal its guitar so he could join the competition only to find out that every time he played the guitar he disappears that no one can see him except for his dog (Dante).
Miguel who experienced this transformation was able to cross the bridge of the Land of The Dead wherein only the dead one could see him, and he was able to see the dead. Given the opportunity to cross to the after-life was the chance for him to finally meet for the very first time his family member who was dead already (his great-great-grandfather Hector and his great-great-grandmother Imelda) remembering their faces from the photo that he saw in the picture frame that was destroyed accidentally by him. The two souls couldn't cross over and just were stuck in the Land of The Dead because of unfinished business.
Miguel should be back before the sunlight because if he fails to do so he will remain there forever. To go back to a place of the live ones to be with his family again he needs a blessing from his family, Imelda blessed him but on one condition that he would not be engaging in singing or guitar playing, but Miguel refused it, and try to find Ernesto because he was thinking that Ernesto was his great-great-grandfather. On his way he meets Hector, the skeleton who wants to go back to the living to see his daughter but he can hardly do it because his photo was not in Ofrenda, no one has put his photo- the Land of The Dead has a rule that 'no photo means no exist'. Hector seeks help from Miguel to bring back his photo to the land of the live ones so that he will have a chance to visit his daughter before it's too late, but Miguel escapes and goes to the Mansion of Ernesto whom he thinks is his great-great-grandfather. This was the time that Miguel finally knew that it wasn't Ernesto but Hector his great-great-grandfather, and Hector was killed by Ernesto because Ernesto stole the song that was originally composed by Hector for his daughter Coco, the only person who could still remember him in the world of the living. Miguel finally knew that his great-great-grandfather wanted to go home to be with his wife Imelda and daughter Coco was the result of his death, upon hearing the revelation the couple finally reconciled.
During the concert of Ernesto, they planned to take a photo of Hector Ernesto and expose the crime that he committed against Hector. Ernesto is crushed by falling with the church bell same as what had happened to him in his previous life, but unfortunately, their plan fails because the photo falls into the water and disappears.
As the sun rises, Hector is forgotten by Coco. Imelda gave the blessings to Miguel to be able to go back to the living but this time with no condition.
When Miguel is finally home he plays the song to Coco that Hector wrote during his childhood days and the memory brings back to Coco to remember his late father Hector. As soon as her memory with Hector crashes in she gives the torn-out piece of the photo of Hector to Miguel.
Elena reconciles with Miguel and lets the music back with their family again.
One year had passed, and Coco was dead already, Miguel restored the photo of Hector and Imelda including Coco, and put it on Ofrenda.
Ernesto's fame vanished and Hector replaced his legacy, the legacy that was stolen by Ernesto for a very long period. As time passed by, Hector, Imelda, and Coco got a chance to visit the living family members every time Miguel sang and played music for his dead and living relatives.
