The movie named ‘Freedom Writers’ was based on a true story and it was released on January 5, 2007. The movie discusses the different societal issues such as racism, which is a common problem in our society, loss of loved ones, family problems, and discrimination. Erin Gruwell (portrayed by Hilary Swank), who is a young English teacher at Wilson High in Long Beach, California. She discovered the struggles of her students who went through a challenging phase.
In Room 203, most of the students are black, Latinos, and Asian. They group themselves according to their race and sit in class by groups. Because of the false allegations, violence, and threats when they were young, they learned how to adapt this kind of living. At a very young age, they are exposed with injustice and racism that leads to fighting one another. Miss Erin Gruwell, their teacher, wanted help them but the school didn’t show any support and declined to give help. Miss Erin was dedicated to help everyone to the point she exerted effort to connect with her students. She even worked part-time jobs to save up enough money to buy stuff that she will be using for the students. Miss Erin bought writing materials and give them to her students. She came up an activity where students can freely write anything on the journal she gave, it can be their problems, feelings, etc. The students left on their locker and Miss Erin found and she began to read it one by one. After reading the journal her students left, Miss Erin finally got to know how her students lived every day in a cruel world, where every day they had to struggle to survive from the injustice they experienced and loss of loved ones. Because of her eagerness to help them, she had to take more part-time jobs in Room 203 on a trip. During the trip, the students finally got to know each other and began to form a relationship. Who had thought because of a simple notebook help students changed their lives? They have become more open about their feelings and can finally express themselves.

The film is an educational movie that talks the different real-life experiences, the societal issues, and hardships that everyone is facing every day. The directors and producers of the film really worked hard to come up with this film. I would definitely say that this movie is worth to watch from the cast, plot, storyline, and even the camera work. I highly recommend everyone to watch this masterpiece, especially to the youth to understand the truth about reality, how our society is full of injustice and discrimination. ‘Freedom Writers’ taught me the importance of having a freedom – the freedom where I can express myself without any hindrance and to be myself.
