In 1905, we first started notice some of history’s first ever movie theaters appear. One of the first were known as ‘nickelodeon’, it cost 5 cents to enter the movie theaters, therefore it was seen as very exclusive. Once we see an upside to the attribute, we can also notice an ugly backside to it. A lot of roomers and propaganda regarding World War I was very common to see. It effected the people of America, then the war made USA shift into a cultural increase, which Hollywood practically ruled over. It’s announced that the first ever Hollywood movie was made by Cecil B. DeMille and it was known as ‘The Squaw Man’ in 1914, however no one really knows if the truth has been spoken here.
In the following years the movie scene exploded and around the 1920’s hundreds of movies were being relisted each year and it was also by then the term ‘movie star’ came to life as a nickname for the main actors from each and every famous movie. Different new labels in the film industry started to appear and lots of new studios were built in the process. Advertisements started to pop up pretty much everywhere and they created an imaged for each of the companies, which were important in the making of show-bossiness. People were dragged by the awesome feeling to be a part of a big movie, and that made the industry even bigger than was it was before.
In about a decade the movie scene picked up a lot of speed and so, in the 1920’s the Golden Age of Hollywood came to be, along with the launching of new genres like action, horror and comedy films. Movies now became more complex to deal with. The filmmakers started to use specialized audio tracks and some special effects to boost the intensity of the films. Nevertheless, not everything went as correct and simple as they might’ve wished for and so the movie industry was punished during the Second World War.
However, it seems like people can’t get enough of it, because as time passed it picked up speed again. With the new colored film and better recorded audio it became even bigger than before. Then the problems came back, television started to infiltrate the cinema scene and became its biggest rival. It was a lot easier to use, compared to going to a cinema which costs way more money and it became more and more inconvenient and disturbing for the customers. Lowering ticket prices only made it worst for the market and it became harder for the non-profitable comedies, and it even grew to a point where they just couldn’t cut it anymore. The only way to get people interested to pay more than they should is to upgrade and develop it into something bigger the television ever could be. It was a time when the action genre was reborn with a more epic style together with new technology in form of special effects that were used to their fullest. Around 1980’s movies like the ‘Terminator’ (1984) with Arnold Schwarzenegger were often met with huge success in the cinemas. The key was really the special effects that quickly developed and made it possible to showcase the thing that most people saw as impossible. To add some sort of animations into the movies also became more relevant and it gave this one special corporation, that soon came to be familiar to everyone, ‘Disney’ its final touch.
In 1901, in the big city of Chicago a boy named Walt Elias Disney was born. When Walt turned four, he along with his family moved to a farm on the country side. He found a big interest in drawing early on in his life. He most enjoyed drawing the animals, although he always dreamed to attend to a real course in drawing someday. Walt’s dream became reality, after the First World War he went back to Kansas City, USA, together with another artist named Ub Iwerks and soon after that he became the owner of a small advertising agency. Walt had his own thoughts and began to experiment with cartoons. They soon made a small cartoon short film that sold on the cinemas in Kansas City and the agency, that once were small and unknown, now turned into a movie company. In 1923, Walt moved to Hollywood. He was very close to his first breakthrough in 1926 with the cartoon 'Oswald the Lucky Rabbit', but it didn’t work out as planned. One day he drew a mouse with to big ears. He sooner asked his wife Lillian for some advice, she suggested ‘Mickey Mouse’ as a name for his creation. None of the knew by then what was yet to come.
We regularly hear rumors and sayings about the big amounts of money that movies cash in after their big movie releases. But what we have to keep in mind is that the companies aren’t only making money of the visitors at the cinemas, nowadays the movies reach far more than you actually think. Without a drought, I can tell you that the companies behind these movies are so dedicated to reach out to you, that they do all in their power to transport the movie in your interest directly into your closest cinema or theater if possible. I don’t stop there, Blockbuster also provided with DVD rental since 1985 until they were taken over by their competitor Netflix around year 2005, but that’s not my point, my point is that there is always an option for the big movie companies to continue their money making.
In conclusion, since the film industry released their first movie 100 years ago, they have had ups and downs along the way to the top with Hollywood being in the center of it. At the beginning the road could seem a bit rough and crooked, but there comes always a time where we see the light in the tunnel and things gets easier. The film industry has proving just how important the movie culture is to the American people as well as the world. No one can ever say that it’s easy to build a successful production company, but Walt has once again showed that with his will and determination, it is possible. New doors are opening every day and more clever ideas will be made in the future. Just wait and see the Internet is just the beginning.
