Diversity in relations and how we relate with people around us has evolved from the discrimination against ethnic backgrounds, race, and religion to the mere fact that we as humans were born with a difference in thought, gender, and sexual orientation. Such is the case when we look into the demographic complexities that are in the LGBTQ community. The LGBTQ is a socio-demographic culture that has sparked existence all around the world as it encompasses lesbians (L), gays (G), bi-sexual (B), transgender (T) and queer (Q) in society and grouped them to form a community that has held its ground as a point of recognition for integration and acceptance into society for them being who they are. This, however, was never the case in the early days. (D'Emilio, [1998])
The LGBTQ community came into the rise after the Stonewall riots of 1969; where before that, anyone associated with homophobia was subjected to fines, imprisonment and also death to some extreme extents. This was all because gay and lesbian involvement in America was considered illegal. The Mafia in Stonewall saw an opportunity to open up gay and lesbian pubs where gays and lesbians and anyone of fluid sexual orientation were free to come and be. Though this was a haven for them, the mafia extorted them and also called the police from time to time to raid the Stonewall pubs where gay people were arrested and underwent brutality. On Friday, 27th of June 1969 with the police raids coming into one of the mafia-run pubs with a charge of illegal sale of alcohol, passer-bys got tired from the frustration of seeing other genderqueer people dragged into a police wagon and soon the riots sparked. After riot police calmed down the first heated riots, the next day all people in the vicinity supporting and part of the gender queer association joined together for a riot that later to date became the Gay Pride. Slowly through weeks on of these riots, there was a point of legislation that led to the era and birth of the LGBTQ community. (Deitcher, [1995])
The legislation that sparked a wave in 1970 to the formation of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) helped pave the way to the now LGBTQ community that consists of genderqueer individuals that associated with the sexual orientation of homosexuality – for gay and lesbians- bisexuals, transgender, and queers. All these indicate sexual identity that some love individuals of the same sex, others are fluid to love from both sexes while transgender people get to have either a point in life that they use surgery and hormonal replacements to get to be of a certain gender that they weren't. Sparked by colorful parades that help them celebrate this fluidity in acceptance, the LGBTQ community is known to vibrant and flamboyant in their dressing to how they have influenced fashion to let alone lifestyles in the public and society at large. Though this has been legislated into law in some countries it has not been well received by some societies.
Religion-based faith communities and countries addressing the LGBTQ community have come across as showing off discrimination towards those in society. Riots and unrest have sparked throughout some countries to the point where said practices of brutality and human endangerment have erupted with queer individuals in some countries facing death for expressing who they are. This has led to people associated with the LGBTQ community seeking asylum in nations that have legislated laws passed like the USA. (Orel, [2004]) This has sparked also some families to disown their children for having the asexual orientation that is not male or female. Other societies and families have gone the extra mile to even call their transgender relatives 'products of witchcraft’ and have banished and disowned them. (Bouris A., (2010))
The Stonewall riots sparked the beginning of the modern-day liberation movement that brought attention to others who were marginalized for their sexual or gender orientations. Today in the 21st Century, pride parades are held on the anniversary of the very first gay parade (28th June 1970) to mark the whole era that begun. No longer would people suffer and endure the stigma associated with their gender and sexual orientation. (H, [1996])
Each person in this world has the right to equality and expression of who they are; whether by definition of their skin, race, religion, ethnicity, or any other demographic standard that can be chosen to break the mold into areas of acceptance. Gender and sexual orientations are no different in accepting a fellow human being as an equal. In them being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender poses no conflict by them breathing the same oxygen that any other individual. The aspect of integration is well and above accepted as many other people are coming out with their gender or sexual fluidity into the community. The aspect of acceptance by first and foremost acknowledging them as human beings, treating them with the respect that is accorded to each and everyone, talking and listening, providing support, staying involved and also being proactive; maybe then the world will grow a little kinder.
