The theme of the story presents readers with a shadowy murderous plot where the husband of Minnie Wright was found dead in their home. She has been arrested as a presumed suspect in the crime and is being held for a trial. The scene of the crime is set at a farmhouse with various items left scattered messy and unorganized. Five people arrive at the crime scene to investigate and start searching the bedroom upstairs. A quilt caught the attention of the women which was being worked on by Minnie. Mr. Hale asks Minnie a question about her husband’s death and she replies by saying she was not awake at the time he was killed. Disappointed by the lack of evidence to convict Winnie, George Henderson asks Peters about the kitchen but the sheriff rejects the scene as insignificant to the crime. The county attorney finds out that the mess is related to the jars of fruits exploding.

George soon after takes notice of a dirty towel in the kitchen suggesting that Minnie was a poor housekeeper. Mrs. Hale responds by saying that properly running a farmhouse requires a lot of hard work. This leads to the attorney responding that Mrs. Hale is showing loyalty towards a person of the same gender. She then replies that she has hardly ever seen her during the past couple of years. During further questioning by the attorney in the trial, Mrs. Hale avoids talking negatively about John Wright. Mr. Peters asks George whether his wife can bring a few items to Minnie in jail and the attorney agrees as long as he reviews the belongings. Upset because of the men going upstairs Minnie, and Mrs. Peter point out that the men are only performing their jobs.

The women collected a few clothes for Minnie who appears to have very little money meaning that John was pretty tight with money. This leads to the assumption that Minnie kept socially to herself and limited interaction with other women’s activities. Asked by Mrs. Hale if she thought that Minnie killed John, Mrs. Peters swiftly denies the accusation put forward. The women understand how strange it is for John to be murdered while asleep. Mrs. Peters was told by George that the men were searching strictly for evidence that would present a motive for John’s death. The quilt which was found by the women was incomplete and belonged to Minnie. The men then decide to head over to the barn. Mrs. Hale examines the quilt and sees that the end is very poorly sewn. She begins pulling out stitches leading the women to think that Minnie could have been nervous. This story represents the various positions of different gender profiles.
