Most romance comedy films are evaluated using very similar criteria. A romance comedy should consist of a good plot, one or multiple profound messages, good actors, humor, and originality. It is important to have all these components so that the audience wants to continue watching the film and enjoy it. The film “When We First Met” is a rom-com about a man who falls in love with a girl he meets at a party and ends up getting friend-zoned at the end of the night. Fast forward, years later he is drinking his sorrows away at her engagement party that is with another man. He gets the chance to go back in time and redo that night over and over until he can get the girl of his dreams to love him the way that he loves her. This film is targeted towards an audience that consists more of teen girls; girls generally flow with the scenes and feelings shown in rom-coms.

One main criterion that I used to evaluate the film “When We First Met” was deciding if it had a good plot. The plot is how the events in the film are sequenced which is usually shown through cause and effect; where each event affects the next. It is important to have a good plot in a romance comedy because the audience wants to watch the events unfold in order instead of getting confused if the scenes were to continuously jump around. One of the first scenes in the film starts with a girl at her wedding and shows a flashback to how she and the main character first met. After the flashback, it goes back to the wedding where she introduces her husband who is not the one from the flashback. This is the start of a good plot because it gives the audience background information and leads them into the story. “When We First Met” takes the audience into a few alternate timelines showing how the main character's actions from one night affect the way he is three years later; this is a great way to demonstrate the plot throughout the movie. Another way I evaluated this film was by finding profound messages. Some profound messages that are in this film include the past can affect your future, and that things don’t always end up as planned, but it is the journey taken that changes you. It is important to have a profound message because the meaning that it brings can encourage new ideas and commentary to the world around us.
