Smoking is an evil that is crippling our society, and the worst part is, we as individuals are not doing enough to stop this from destroying our society. Smoking is an addiction that controls the subjects so much that they can’t live without cigarettes. It becomes a compulsive habit. Sometimes it is so bad that people steal, lie, threaten, and neglect their duties to get the cigarettes they are enslaved by. When drugs are combined with cigarettes, it becomes a lethal combination that results in extreme incapacitation of smokers and may also lead to death. Smoking is an evil that needs to be rooted out of society. Hence, smoking should be banned in public places.
There is no dearth of scientific studies that prove the myriad harmful and life-threatening effects of smoking. Smoking affects the lungs, causes many respiratory diseases, causes lung cancer, and heart disease, and chewing tobacco can also cause mouth cancer. The list of maladies caused by this vicious habit is endless and alarming. Not only does smoking harm the smoker, but it also endangers non-smokers. Research studies show that non-smokers are severely and more adversely affected by the side smoke or the smoke exhaled by smokers. As the lungs of non-smokers are not accustomed to the toxic fumes, it is more dangerous to them than to the smokers whose lungs become adjusted to the level of toxins over the years. The phenomenon of inhaling smoke produced by others is called passive smoking. Passive smoking is a leading cause of respiratory diseases, headaches, asthma, cough, irritation in the eyes, and many more. It is hazardous to the health of innocent people who don’t even smoke. That’s why smoking should be banned in public places.

Besides eliminating passive smoking, banning smoking in public places will also cause other benefits like impressionable children and teenagers won’t pick up this doomed habit. When children or adolescents see someone smoking, there is a chance that they might copy him/her and start smoking. So, smoking should be banned in public places because fewer people will copy and adopt this habit. The second advantage of banning smoking will be the protection of the environment. Smoking releases many harmful gases when a cigarette is lighted. These gases pollute the air and make it difficult to breathe for all living beings. Even plants are affected negatively by the smoke. Thus, banning smoking will lead to a healthier environment.
