The earthquakes that rocked Haiti and Chile were caused by the Earth's shifting tectonic plates. Researchers have developed a new model (MORVEL for 'mid-ocean ridge velocities') of the Earth to predict the movement of one plate relative to another (Sherwood, 2019). This new research project by scientists allows us humans to predict what will happen in the future. We can use this to our advantage of our planet to help save many lives that would be lost due to natural disasters. This project can help ensure that we can prepare for any events that can come at us unexpectedly.
'Plate tectonics describes almost everything about how the Earth's surface moves and deforms, but it's remarkably simple in a mathematical way,' said Chuck DeMets, a geophysicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. (Sherwood, 2019)

'We live on a dynamic planet, and it's important to understand how the surface of the planet changes', Gordon said. 'The frequency and magnitude of earthquakes depend upon how the tectonic plates move. Understanding how plates move can help us understand surface processes like mountain-building and subsurface processes like mantle convection'. (Sherwood, 2019) Furthermore, this helps us to discover more about how the Earth works whereby invoking more research for scientists to take on.
The model can help scientists predict future tectonic plate movements. 'Along the boundaries where plates meet there are lots of active faults', DeMets said. 'It's useful to know how quickly the plates are slipping across those faults because it gives you some feeling about how often large earthquakes might occur' (Sherwood, 2019). These earthquake predictions are such a great phenomenon in which we can save many lives. This will also allow us to prepare ahead of time to help reduce not only great loss of life but also save the economy by preparing resources and backup plans for when the earthquake happens.
The Earth’s plate tectonics play a vital role in is necessary for the evolution of life. Without plate tectonics there may not be oceans that we have today. This is because of the mantle consuming the water then releasing it back into the ocean. Subduction is another characteristic that plays a huge role in having the evolution of complex life. Many researchers believe that without the plate tectonics we may not even have the complex life forms that we have today. Going back to the topic of subduction, if we didn’t have the process of subduction happening then the ocean floor would be devoid of the interesting chemistry, this therefore leads to the idea of life may not have even happened in the first place without tectonic plates.
