Morris Park is a charming and lively neighborhood that is located in the Eastern part of the NYC borough that is known as The Bronx. On a chilly Wednesday afternoon in October, I decided to talk a walk around the community. Starting on Paulding Avenue and walking down Morris Park Avenue toward Williamsbridge Road, my initial impression was that the community was a bustling place that was buzzing with plenty of people on the streets. As people continued to walk by, I immediately noticed the diversity of people around me. Although the population of passerby’s appeared to be primarily Caucasian, there was a noticeable amount of Hispanic and African American people. Within the community, there also appeared to have a few Asian residents but not many. This distinct observation attracted my attention because I could immediately note the difference from when I was a school-aged child growing up in Morris Park when there was hardly any other races besides White people in that neighborhood. There was also medley of various aged children running around or on scooters or bikes, adults walking or getting in their cars, people walking their dogs, families walking with their strollers, people of all ages, young and old, just walking around or going in and out of the local stores. It was pretty common to see older adults posted on the corners of blocks or in front of the mom and pop stores just sitting in lawn chairs and hanging out. I noticed that they would just talk to each other and to other people who were just passing by whom they had known on a first name basis. That gives me the impression that Morris Park is a very family and community oriented neighborhood. Everyone appears to be very friendly, everyone knows everyone, and they always stop to make conversation regardless of age or race.
As I was walking, I stopped to notice the physical surroundings of how the neighborhood looked. My impression was that the neighborhood was a clean and prospering community. The streets were free of any garbage, as the green NYC garbage cans were planted on every corner of each block. The main avenues of Morris Park and Williambridge Road are centers of business as these blocks mainly consist of family owned businesses and restaurants, with a few large apartment buildings. The other side streets are primarily two-family housing of differing styles, some with pitched roofs and others with front porches or single car garages. Many of these private houses were nicely decorated in preparation for Halloween. The houses and buildings were in pristine shape, free of garbage and graffiti. Most noticeably, it was my impression that the community strongly valued its Italian background and kept strong ties to the Italian culture. Evidently, Italian flags were posted on many of the telephone poles, the fire hydrants and traffic poles had the Italian flag painted on them, banners with the Italian flag were hung from the traffic lights and the colors of the Italian flag were painted on the main roads.

As I continued to observe what Morris Park had to offer, it was very clear that there was an overabundance of restaurants and places to eat and many of them were Italian based. There were a lot of traditional pizza shops, a pasta market, Italian bakeries, and Italian café, Italian restaurants and a wholesale Italian marketplace. On the other hand, the neighborhood has appeared to have expanded its culture and now included dining options such as an Albanian restaurant, an Albanian café, a Spanish restaurant, Chinese food stores, an American burger shop, a few bodegas and a few major fast food and coffee chains including a drive through Starbucks. Along my walk down Morris Park Avenue, I also noticed an Urgent care facility, two dental offices, two major hospitals, a doctor’s office, multiple big-name pharmacies (Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens), a supermarket, three banks, a travel agency, a jewelry shop, a large park, a cigar shop, tanning booths, hair/nail salons, two bars, a vape shop, a public library, a police precinct, and a fire station. I also noticed a multitude of different churches, several grade schools both public and private, and a Catholic high school. It is my impression that Morris Park is a growing community that offers a multitude of services and amenities that caters to the needs and values of an increasingly diverse community that continues to flourish.
