The lion has lived on this planet for over a million years and is the second largest wild cat after the tiger. It is a symbol of strength, power and courage. Most lions live in Africa. There is also a small population of lions called the Asian lion that lives in India.

Habitat
Lions usually live in savannas and meadows, but can also live in shrubs and forests. There were 100,000 lions living in the wild 25 years ago, but human encroachment and conflict have since reduced the number to about 25,000. The lion population in West Africa is now less than 400 and it is believed that the cat will soon become extinct in this area.
Hunting and Prey
Groups of female lions usually hunt together, mainly with hooves, such as buffaloes, zebras, gazelles, Himalayas, different types of deer and vultures. They will also attack pets. These big cats are usually without predators and so are at the top of the food chain, but they are also opportunistic looking for food. They tend to sleep during the day and hunt at night.
Reproduction and Lifespan
The gestation period of the female lion (pregnancy) is just over 100 days. Lionesses usually have one to four young, which they keep in a den (an isolated area). Babies are born blind and weigh between 2 and 5 kilos. Their eyes will open about a week after birth. The lioness will continue to move her hiding place to prevent her newborns from being attacked by other predators. After several weeks, both the lioness and her young will return to pride. Modern lions live in the wild for about 12 years, although captive lions live almost twice as long. In the wild, rivalries between men are so common that constant fighting reduces their lifespan by almost fifty percent.
