In the scene 'Brooks', I observed in Frank Darabont's 'The Shawshank Redemption', Brooks Hatlen was released on parole from the Shawshank Prison after serving time for 50 years. During this time Brooks had become institutionalized by prison life, being treated like shit, and having no freedom was normal for him. Brooks’s attitude reflects the way he feels in the outside world, along with the fact that society had changed tremendously over the last 50 years, making it hard for him to adapt. The attitudes in this scene are portrayed to the audience by the use of camera shots.

While traveling to the halfway house, Brooks’s emotions show us his attitude toward the outside world. This shows the audience that he is unsure and a little overwhelmed, giving us a hint that Brooks may find it hard to adapt to society, as so much has changed while being in prison for the majority of his life. As the scene furthers, we see Brooks nearly get hit by traffic, he then quoted, “The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry”. Brooks is seen in a close-up shot while the quote is said. The director has chosen this shot to reveal the character's thoughts and emotions, giving us a deeper understanding of how the character is feeling. This sets the tone for the scene showing the audience how debilitating it can be to miss out on the world changing around you. The technique of camera shots provides the audience with a range of attitudes and emotions that the characters experience during this scene (mid-shots and close-ups are used effectively in this scene to create depth and meaning). While Brooks was staying at the halfway house, he had a job packing bags at the foodway, which he hated. He then starts thinking of ways he could get sent back to prison by robbing the foodway or killing the manager, but soon decides he is too old for all that. All his attitudes begin to contrast before he quotes: “I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay”. The director wants us to feel upset and understand how society can make someone feel unwelcome and to emphasize how it can be very difficult to adapt after being away for so long.
After observing this scene from 'The Shawshank Redemption', I can say that the character's attitudes in this scene represent how fast society can change and how it affects someone who has been away from it for so long. We see Brooks emotionally struggling in his new life outside of prison, a place where he felt alone, and living in constant fear. Brooks heads out into the outside world with little to no knowledge of how things work, making him very vulnerable. What stuck out to me the most was the quote “The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry”. I feel that this does have an effect on me, the viewer. Although I was obviously not around in the early 1900s to know how fast things changed back then. I am here now in 2019 and things do move fast, technology changing and growing every day. For Brooks to come out of prison and into society after being in there for 50 years would make it extremely hard to adapt after missing so much.
