My Path to Success
Google defines a barrier as “a circumstance or obstacle that keeps people or things apart or prevents communication or progress.” My personal definition of a barrier is something that stops you from reaching your full potential. In this paper, I will address my top three barriers that can potentially prevent me from being successful. For instance, my main concern is my time management. Balancing work and school is very difficult for me. As of right now, I am currently employed part-time at a local cafe. I used to only work for about 4 hours a day. Now I currently work 6-12 hours a day and have 1 day off a week if I can convince someone to cover for me, which is quite hard considering we are short-staffed. In my 15-day periods, I typically work 80-95+ hours. Right now it’s been about 88 hours. Thankfully I only have to balance one class at the moment. The next semester though I’ll be taking 5 classes. I’ve tried convincing my managers to hire new employees to lessen the workload on everyone. However, there have been no improvements made.
Think of your schooling as an investment in yourself and your career. The time and money you use is the investment and the overall reward is a career that has a higher return rate than the initial “investment”. So as a personal decision I’ll be leaving there in November and will make school my top priority. I’ve saved enough to help pay for my car and other expenses so I don’t need to be too worried. School is my career and I need to take it more seriously. I’ve been working since I’ve turned 16. I need a break to focus on mental health and school. Another barrier of mine is procrastination. I would be lying to you if I didn’t tell you that I wrote this paper on Tuesday, the day before it was due. I need to manage my time better. If I already know of obstacles that I have, such as not having a computer. I should make room in my schedule for multiple trips to the library instead of just once. I tend to push things off until the absolute last minute. That prevents me from producing clear concise work, resulting in low grades. If I am to be successful in college I need to produce work that is fitting for a college-level student.

I am going to start getting to work on assignments as soon as they are assigned to get them done correctly, and on time. Another one of my pesky personal barriers is my unwillingness to ask for help when I encounter a problem. I have the tendency to resist asking for help on assignments where I’m unclear on what I’m supposed to do. This barrier also ties into procrastination. I tend to waste time because I don’t ask for help. This causes me to take even more time to complete tasks. Especially in my short amount of time off of work to do assignments. In order to correct my barriers I’m going to speak up. If I don’t understand something I’m going to ask for an explanation. If I have questions concerning assignments I can email my instructors for further advice. Another way I can remove my barriers from my academic career is that I must stay organized. There are strengths in planning ahead such as being able to have time to revise and update your plan. In case anything happens you still have an idea of what you are trying to accomplish and what you want. Set standards for yourself and allow for some compromise. Being organized and planning out when I need to complete assignments will help me manage my time more efficiently. By combining these simple changes I’ll be able to be successful in college and my grades won’t suffer. This essay helped me realize what I need to work on to improve my college career and make better decisions.
