If you don’t want to take care of yourself, then taking care of your baby should be more important to you. Imagine if you were a baby, in a stomach and what you had for breakfast was a cloud of smoke. Smoking during pregnancy is more common than we think. According to a 2008 study by the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, which interviewed women in 26 states in the United States, about 13% of women reported smoking during the last three months of pregnancy, and this number has only increased over the years, becoming, in my opinion, a huge social problem today.

The impacts of smoking during pregnancy can cause so many disastrous things. Smoking raises the probability of both early unexpected births and stillbirths. The hazardous things that cigarettes are regularly to blame for. The placenta is a ‘lifeline’ structure that is structured during pregnancy to give the undeveloped organism enhancements and oxygen. Smoking is a huge danger factor for a couple of complexities associated with the placenta. This is a condition wherein the placenta separates from the uterus before work. The placenta’s startling quality can cause extraordinary depletion and undermine the lives of both mother and baby. There’s no restorative strategy or treatment to reattach it.

Fetuses are also at risk, not only mothers. Moms who smoke are bound to risk their children dying. Preterm conveyance is a main source of death, incapacity, and sickness among babies. One in every five infants destined to moms who smoke during pregnancy has low birth weight. Moms who smoke while pregnant are bound to have lower birth weight babies. Infants brought into the world prematurely or too soon are prone to a lot more complications like vision problems, dental issues, behavioral and psychological problems, and even more. The types of birth defects associated with smoking during pregnancy are heart defects and cleft lip; SIDS can also be caused by smoking during pregnancy. In addition, mothers who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to a baby with many respiratory problems than normal babies, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and chronic cough. Asthma can also be a consequence of smoking during pregnancy. Smoking during pregnancy reduces the oxygen supply to your baby and even the mother. Children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy have a 1.5 times higher risk of developing asthma than children whose mothers never smoked.

Effects on a fetus should be taken seriously and not taken lightly. Smoking can cause miscarriages, lung problems, and asthma. These detrimental long-term effects on a woman can cause troubles in the future or be harmful. No matter who you are, being pregnant is a responsibility that a woman must commit to, and regardless of whether one chooses to keep the baby or not, the long-term effects of smoking while pregnant are too drastic for one to even consider smoking during their terms of pregnancy.
