There are many people in the world that we live in and not everyone shares the same worldview. There is three world views that most people fit in, they are anthropocentric, earth-centric, and biblical. The anthropocentric worldview is where one believes that humans are the most intelligent and dominant species. This worldview believes that the environment should be managed to benefit humans, that other organisms have use – based value. Earth – Centric worldview is where one believes that all life has intrinsic value, and that humans are not in charge of the world but part of nature. They believe that humans are to work with nature and not conquer it. A biblical worldview is where one puts Christ in the center of everything they do, and try to live by the teachings of the bible. A biblical worldview share similarities with both anthropocentric and earth – centric. The biblical worldview similarity with anthropocentric is that humans are meant to rule the world and is the most important species. The biblical worldview similarity with earth – centric is that we should live sustainably and that all life has value.

The biblical worldview is the view that I try to have. I try to make my decisions in life based off of the teachings of the bible. I believe that God put man on earth to rule it, but at the same time we are supposed to respect nature, both plants and animals. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26, KJV). I believe the bible also teaches that animals are important. When God flooded the earth he instructed Noah to build an arc big enough to carry two of every animal, one male and one female, and protected them from drowning. “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.” -Proverbs 12:10 (NIV). I also believe god wants us to take care of the environment, he put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to take care of it. I believe God wants us to do what is right in taking care of the earth so that our children and future generations can live prosperously. The bible says we should be fruitful and multiply. God made the earth and everything in it, we all belong to the Lord. I believe God loves all of us and the world he created, and we should take care of the things that God made.

Although I try to have a biblical worldview, I am definitely not perfect. I ran the foot print calculator and was surprised to learn that if everyone on earth lived the same way I live, we would need 5.6 earths to live comfortably. I think one thing that I could change in my lifestyle that would help the environment, would be to change the amount of garbage I have. Currently I do not recycle and just take all my trash to the landfill. I think if I was to recycle it would help the environment. I am planning to recycle not only to help the environment, but it would also save me money, as recycling does not cost anything. Another thing that I could change in my lifestyle is upgrading my light bulbs and appliances to energy efficiency ones. I have already been trying to do this, recently my dishwasher went out and I upgraded to an energy efficiency one that uses less water. I have also upgraded my washer and dryer to ones who have the energy star qualifications. Most appliances are expensive so it is not an option for me to replace them all at one time, so I have been replacing them as they break down and force me to replace them. Another thing that is not so good about my lifestyle, is the amount of drive time I spend a week. I drive at least 65 miles a day for work. The county that I live in does not have very many living wage jobs, so that forces me to drive an hour to and from work every day. One thing I could do to try and cut back on my drive time is look for others that live close to the same area as me and try and carpool. Although working two jobs and going to school, I don’t believe this is an option for me at this time. I would also like to improve my lifestyle by using solar power. Currently I get my electricity from the local power company, I would love to one day go to using solar panels for electricity. Not only would it cut my monthly electrical bill, but it would be better for the environment. I also use electric heat, although I did put in a gas fireplace earlier this year. The last thing I would change about my life style that I could actually start doing right away, is not using plastic bags at the grocery store, but instead bring my own reusable bags.

I believe taking care of the environment is important, and having a biblical worldview means I should take care of the earth because that’s what God wants us to do. “When we see the world as a gift from God, we will do our best to take care of it and use it wisely, instead of poisoning or destroying it.” (Billy Graham).
