We want to make expandable shoes for people in poverty. A definition of poverty is the state of being extremely poor. Giving them expandable shoes removes the need to buy new shoes of a new size which saves money so they can spend more money on safe food and water. From one source I learned the 5 most common materials to make shoes with. According to kicksguide they were leather, textiles, synthetics, rubber, and foam. We plan to use rubber because it is cheap, easy to get, easy to form. Rubber is the material we are going to use for our project. Life without shoes can cause injury or disease. Giving people that are living in poverty shoes that let them work safer in hazardous conditions. In some countries if you don't wear shoes a parasitic worm can bore into your exposed foot.
The soles are the bottom part of a shoe. The soles are the key part of the shoe. You need a mold of a foot to make the shoe. An average child's foot is the best for the mold because children's feet grows fast. It is cheaper to harvest from an old shoe to make a new one.
The cost of the expandable shoe that is already created is 35 dollars. Your foot can grow a lot and there are a lot of sizes. There are also the .5s like 1.5,2.5,3.5s. So in total, the number of shoes you might have is 14-16. Buying that many shoes can cost a lot. For people in poverty according to the World Bank, the poverty line is in 2 dollars per day. Food costs a lot making the money they save per day very very slim. That is the definition of absolute poverty.
New footwear can empower people psychologically and economically. In many developing countries people require shoes to attend school. An estimated 300 million children do not have shoes If you don't wear shoes you can get serious cuts and infections, with those they can't support their families or go to school.
567 million people around the world suffer from hookworm. A hookworm is a foot parasite that can affect your lung and small intestine.The expandable shoe can offer a better childhood to those in poverty. The hookworm can spread fast, especially for people in poverty. The hookworm spreads in the poop and urine of the infected. According to the Centers for desise control the hookworm can spread if you walk barefoot this is a great disadvantage for people that walk barefoot. The larvae of the hookworm can penetrate the skin of the human and stay there. Children who play in contaminated soil can be at risk. In parts of the country where people have poverty there are a lot of contaminated soil.
The first design of the expandable shoe was created in 2013 created by because international. It was a great success and my science group would like to recreate a better greater version of it to help the kids in poverty. The cost of one of the expandable shoes sold by because international is $39. That is a reasonable price. We plan to make one that's a little cheaper. That shoe uses some velcro straps. There is no back of the shoe. Lots of places of the foot is showing to save money.
