Steven Spielberg is one of the most outstanding writers, producers, and directors in the 20th century. His role as a writer, producer, and director have hugely influenced the history of filmmaking. His philosophy of articulating complex stories into an incredible motion picture is quite astounding for many film watchers. Spielberg is involved in many thrilling and famous movies. For instance, ‘Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘Back to the Future’, ‘Schindler's List’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’, and many more. Spielberg’s amazing latest movie is ‘Lincoln’. ‘Lincoln’ has gained well respect and enjoyment amongst many movie watchers. The reason behind all this is because Spielberg has put great effort and creativity into this extraordinary movie. For Spielberg, the creation of ‘Lincoln’ was the most demanding and time-consuming motion picture in his forty years as a director because of the high expectation of the audience. Therefore, this movie took a long time to create. The movie was based on the book ‘Team of Rivals’ by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Even though this was a very difficult story to fit into two and a half hours. However, Spielberg was able to bring this amazing story into life with intricate and precision. Spielberg’s passion, ideologies, and patient for filmmaking make him the only man to bring perplex stories into the screen. He was able to bring all the stories that he worked on into beautiful and entertaining films. According to the audience, the creation of ‘Lincoln’ was regarded as the most compelling story to be told and imagine in a screen. Spielberg was able to bring this wonderful story from imagination into a sublime film.

I would say, in my film-watching history, I have never seen a movie that brought the story into life than ‘Lincoln’. Everything in this film was spot on and it was effectively communicated. Amongst many great things in this movie, the most compelling and well-articulated aspects of this film were the choice of characteristics and the events that happen during that period. The characteristics portrayed and look at what we imagine they look like in this film. For instance, Daniel Day-Lewis who played as contemporary Lincoln encapsulated Abraham Lincoln perfectly. If we ever wondered what Abraham Lincoln look like, how he talked, and how he walked. Daniel Day-Lewis inherited these qualities and attributes precisely. Also, if we ever wondered what a Civil War battle might have looked like, we can see it in this film. Spielberg has brought everything from Lincoln’s era to this era in an incredible way we could have imagined. He captured the struggle of Lincoln and the people of that era to free the slaves and to end the brutal war between the North and the South. This film was effectively communicated about what happened during Lincoln’s period in every aspect.

This movie communicated the Christian perspective in major ways. We saw president Abraham Lincoln demonstrated some basic Christian values from the beginning to the end. In fact, he quoted the most powerful and compelling line from his last line of the Gettysburg Address: “That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth”. This line is quite remarkable because it reminded the people that this nation is found under God and everyone has equal freedom. However, there are some aspects of this film that do not demonstrate a Christian perspective. That is why the Bible said that all men are sinful and need a savior. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus”. Lincoln was aware and recognized every single person is created equal, which goes back to Genesis 1:27, all men are created in the image of God. He worked hard to close this gap inequality. Of course, I can use this film to share the Gospel. For example, everyone is created in the image of God and God loves us very much that He died on the cross for us. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. This verse shows us that no matter what we have done on our past, Christ loves us unconditionally. As a Christian, I am called to be salt and light to a fallen world, and that I am to serve the lowest of the low. I am called to love everyone equal no matter who they are, as Christ loved me. This movie is a reminder of the depths of sin I can fall into, and the terrible consequences of that sin.

I love every aspect of this movie, but the character chose was outstanding. Daniel Day-Lewis who played as President Lincoln was incredible chose. When watching a film, the most important thing to consider is if the actor or actress represents the character, they portrayed. This film was spot on the characteristics chosen. In this movie, you do not see Daniel Day-Lewis, a two-time Academy Award winner, but you see President Abraham Lincoln. His mannerisms, how he walked, held his hands, how he spoke were all researched and performed in detail. When you see Lincoln, you see a man dealing with the weight of war, with the knowledge of the cost in human lives, wounded by the death of his son, and who struggles to deal with his wife, who has been even more grievously wounded by their son’s death. A man who understood the true genesis of the war, and his unique position to end the abomination of slavery. You hear the stories President Lincoln used to tell. Lewis plays President Lincoln as a real person, not the sanitized ‘saint’ we so often read about. Unlike many movies in recent years, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ does not fall into the trap of overwhelming special effects or a soundtrack that detracts from the movie experience instead of bringing the audience closer to the story. The visual imagery in the movie is breathtaking; the soundtrack works well to bring the story to life. The acting performances are often understated, and often the movie shows the power of speech and the raw exercise of power in politics.
