Often, I have heard people dialogue about their other side. When I was younger, thinking in my small, un-nurtured mind, I only considered the physical aspect of a person’s other side. From my childhood to the present, I have matured and have a better understanding of what one ponders as his or her other side. As a practicing Christian, I have been taught that I have a soul. “Soul is defined as the hidden or “spiritual” side of a person” (Willard, 2006). The core of my natural being is my soul. It is not often that I have conversations with others about my soul, but it may warrant a conversation from time to time with individuals that may have foreseeably lost their spiritual way and need guidance toward salvation.

When I contemplate my relationship with God, I cannot do so without thinking about the role that my soul plays in the connection. “The first and most basic thing we can and must do is to keep God before our minds” (Willard, 2006). For me to operate in the most ethical manner that I know how to do so, my actions must first align with the goal that I have for my soul. My goal is to make it to heaven, and through the teachings that I hold true, my soul must be saved for me to reach that goal.

Being human, naturally, my mind wanders daily. There are times that I have impure thoughts that cause me to rethink my soul salvation, as in those very moments, I find myself drifting from the vail of God. Though a scary thought, my connection to God sustains my mentality. We are designed from birth to encompass what we are taught by those around us, as well as the way to put what we are taught into action. “We may abandon that knowledge as the years go by, but it never abandons us” (Palmer, 2004, p. 32). The teachings that I have learned about my soul are near and dear to me and they help to keep me grounded, as they are a part of my toolbox for self-care and appreciation.

It is inevitable that I will interact with others every day. Interactions take place in multiple locations. Not all interactions and locations are ideal. As the keeper of my soul, I must consider all things when making decisions wherever I am. “God is greatly concerned with the quality of character we are building” (Willard, 2006). I hold myself to high standards by constantly exploring if God is or is not pleased with my actions and thoughts. “All of us arrive on earth with souls in perfect form” (Palmer, 2004, p. 34). It is up to us as individuals to take the necessary precautions to maintain our innocence in all things.

“Secularism holds that we arrive in the world not as unique individuals, but as malleable raw material that receives the imprint of the gender, class, and race into which we happen to be born (Palmer, 2004, p. 35). The work place can have varying effects on individuals. “Professional concerns shade over into social ones, and thus professional ethics is contiguous with practical ethics” (Borgmann, 2006, p.88). As for me, there are times in the workplace that I drift in a place that I know is not pleasing to my soul and I find myself constantly stopping to ask for forgiveness or just simply rethinking my actions. One place where my soul tends to flourish is at church. When I am gathered with others that are petitioning God on my behalf, as well as on the behalf of others, my soul rejoices. “We arrive in this world undivided, integral, whole” (Palmer, 2004, p. 39).

I rejoice that I am in tune with my soul. I have a certain self-awareness that is sparked when my soul is wounded, as well as when it rejoices. My spirituality keeps me grounded and helps me to understand the teachings of my faith and how to interact while staying true to myself. There is no level of perfectivity as it relates to me, but I am confident that I have a hold of what life has in store for me.
