Statistics shown on obesity there is a significant increase and an alarming rise spreading over the nation. Although it is all not all towards genetics, most of it can be caused by food intake and they way everyone treats and takes care of their bodies. Obesity is a result of one of the most fast-growing civilization developments.
What exactly is obesity? According Katherine Marengo who is apart of a reviewer for a medical team stated that obesity is a medical condition that only can come about when an individual carries excessive weight that will affect your health. If a person were to be overweight it increases health risks and conditions that can turn into cancer. There are many ways obesity can occur such as consuming way too many calories. The amount of calories on how much you should be consuming depends on height and weight (Marengo). Everyone is different and some people have faster metabolisms than others that can consume more than they should and still be at ideal weight. Sometimes the case may be that it’s genetics. A faulty gene called the fat-mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) is responsible for some cases of obesity.

Obesity is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. Studies over many decades each time have been increasing rates with how much the problem has caused and how much of an issue it continues to be. The author Gary Ruskin is an executive director of Commercial Alert and Juliet Schor is a professor of sociology at Boston College. In “Obesity Increases Cancer Risk. (Cover Story).” It stated, “In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and older were overweight. Of these over 650 million adults were obese.” Also mentioned that authorities view this concern as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. This shows that people across the globe are more likely to be obese than underweight. Depending on your metabolism and body type it can be easier than others to get rid of the problem by varieties of diets and or exercises.
The best way to identify yourself on whether you are overweight or not is by a BMI scale. According to Keith Devlin who is a health profession, it states “The BMI was introduced in the early 19th century by a Belgian named Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet. He was a mathematician, not a physician. He produced the formula to give a quick and easy way to measure the degree of obesity of the general population to assist the government in allocating resources.” (Devlin). The way a BMI scale works is by your weight in pounds (lbs), and the height in inches (inch) multiplied by 703. The 703 is to help convert into a metric formula. Using this formula you can use the ranks for what your body type is. Below a 18.5 shows that you are underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the ideal range. And 25.0 to 29.9 shows you are overweight and from 30.0 and higher you are obese. Some may argue that all tests are not true but no other has used something different to show what weight division the subject should be in.
Obesity can put danger and many effects on your health. Obesity increases risks on any type of cancer, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, strokes, and many more. On a Stanfords Health Care, it provides preventions from the issue and treatments and causes.
