Photoshop is a huge controversy in social media today. Although it can be used positively, such as to make photos more unique or eye-catching, there are also many downsides to it. People online can create an image of themselves through photoshop on how they wish people to perceive them, or to fit in more with society’s standards of beauty. Of course, people have become very aware that photoshop is used in things such as magazines and advertisements, and teenagers know not to believe everything they see online. Yet, with new mainstream idols called ‘Instagram Models’ who do not come forward about their editing habits, or everyday Instagram users who have decided to join this trend, it remains an ongoing problem.
In one study I found, adolescent girls were given a series of questions to answer after being exposed to manipulated versus original photos. The results showed that teen girls are generally unaware of how much editing goes into the photos they see online, and it would be more likely to go unnoticed if it was someone they deemed as a ‘regular’ person (Kleemans, Daalmans, Carbaat, Anschütz, 2018). Teenagers tend to compare themselves to their peers more as they can relate to each other, so non-famous Instagram users that use photoshop make the issue even greater (Kleemans et alt., 2018). As well as this, girls who were exposed to the manipulated photos had lower body satisfaction than those who saw the original pictures, and the majority of them believed the images portrayed were realistic (Kleemans et alt., 2018).

In conclusion, as can be seen from the information described above, photoshop has a significant negative impact on the perception and self-perception, especially for teenagers, and photos edited with its help on social networks even pose a threat to them. Through ages of adolescence, brains are still developing and the psychological effects of photoshop can leave youth with low self-esteem and low body satisfaction. Personally, I am constantly using social media and am exposed to pictures of women with ‘idealized’ bodies. Even though I am aware that the girls in the photos I see are most likely enhanced or retouched, I still tend to compare myself to them as they are so heavily praised by other users for their online appearance. Many people do abuse photoshop, especially on social media, which leads to many harmful effects. This is why I believe photoshop should be banned.
