Basketball and Football are two of the most widely known sports in America. When it comes down to it they can be very different but can also be quite common. It’s not a surprise that many college athletes are torn between the two. Basketball and football can vary in the way it’s played, the playing field, and the players themselves. Many people wouldn’t usually compare these two sports together but surely, they must be more alike than we think. If you’re having a hard time choosing between the two here are some things to consider.
Primarily, the method of playing these two sports can at first sight be very different. Basketball is in general less of a contact sport compared to football which is basically all combat. Football requires tackles in order to stop the other team from scoring, while in basketball contact does happen but is considered a foul. The point-scoring system is quite different as well. In football, three points are the least a player can score at once, while in basketball three points are the max you can score at once. Nevertheless, both sports do share some similarities. Each requires a referee to keep things in check and fair, and during both games' players can be substituted if they're tired or injured. Also, formation is needed in both sports to keep the game running smoothly.

Furthermore, the playing field is one of the biggest differences between the two. Football is an outdoor sport with the field sizing up to generally 1.32 acres. Basketball tends to be an indoor game with college courts sizing up to 94 feet long by 50 feet wide. The lighting also plays a factor in each with football obviously having natural lighting seeing as it is outdoors and basketball having artificial indoor lighting. Another factor to consider is the temperature control. This also plays into the indoor/outdoor scenario we’ve been toying around with.
Lastly, the players themselves play the biggest roles in this comparison. The uniforms, the physique, the skill set, and much more all play into the game. Football players are stereotypically more buff and bulky while basketball players are taller and skinnier. The average height of an American male was recorded at 5’ 9 ½” while the average NBA player came in at 6’7” and the average NFL player came in at 6’2”. The uniform for a football player consists of a long-sleeved shirt, padded armor, jerseys, helmets, trousers, and cleats to maximize a player's efficiency, while basketball players typically wear just a vest, basketball shorts, and “basketball shoes” to promote speed and as little weight as possible. Generally, it’s believed that football players need more strength and basketball players need more speed.
In conclusion, basketball and football compare well enough for one to choose which is the best suited for them. There are many factors between the two to consider and there are many similarities and differences. The way it’s played, the scoring system, the fields, and the players all play into how the game runs.
