As someone who has a major interest in technology as well as medicine, I thought finding an article about anything besides medical technology just wouldn’t have made sense. The article I found titled “Will Medical Technology Deskill Doctors?” talks about the negative effects that technology could have in the future. One of Jingyan Lus’ main talking point, which was the one I found most interesting, was the disconnect that doctors are starting to have with their patients and their practice. Something that I noticed in my time volunteering as a nursing assistant for a few years at Memorial Hospital West back a few years ago, which is a major reason why I found this article interesting.
As every year passes more and more technological breakthroughs and innovations make their way into the healthcare industry. While many have enhanced the field, such as making it easier for the government to regulate drugs and for physicians around the world to communicate and collaborate with each other (Shi &Singh, 2019), there could be negative effects over the horizon. An increased use of digital notetaking and an overreliance on technological diagnosing of diseases could lead a lack of skills that were once considered vital to doctors (Lu, 2016) like beside manners and in person examinations. Overreliance on technology could also lead to a disconnect between the physicians and the patients themselves, as doctors look at their tools rather than at the patient. To combat these issues additional training should be provided to current and upcoming doctors and physicians in order to better prepare them on how to properly use equipment without losing the basics of helping each and every patient they come in contact with (Lu, 2016).

I believe that in the future these innovations could prove to have major benefits to many of my future patients if done right. In my time volunteering at Memorial Hospital West one of the biggest questions that many patients had for the nurses was “Could I speak to the doctor?” as doctor visits with the actual patients were relatively short and far between which often left patients frustrated due to a lack of knowledge on what’s going on with them or their loved ones. As long as I can try to keep this disconnect as small as possible, I do believe that it can lead to an overall better relationship with the patient and better experience for them.
