Poetry conveys various universal human issues such as the journey of life, struggles, and making choices. Two poems that convey universal human issues include the poem mother to Son by Langston Hughes and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. The poem mother to Son by Langston Hughes is an uplifting, poem on never giving up. It is about a mother advising her son on the challenges, and struggles of life, and encourages him to follow her and push through life.
This poem conveys universal human issues like facing challenges and the journey of life, The writer Langston Hughes uses metaphors like “life for me ain't me no crystal stair” to show and reveal that life is not like a smooth, clear crystal and that it is a journey in which all people inevitably face obstacles and challenges. “it had tacks in it and splinters, and boards were torn up” Hughes’ use of sharp harsh words symbolize pain, suffering, and hardship. making the reader feel sympathetic towards the mother.
The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost is a 4 stanza poem, about a person walking down a road where there is a diversion with two completely different paths, and they are only able to choose one out of them, Rober Frost presents the universal human issue of making choices and the idea that the choices we make do make a difference and affect our lives as they have an impact on our future and if we make wrong, and careless choices, we will eventually regret it and not be able to go back and change it. so, therefore we must be wise while making choices. Robert Frost personifies the road in the third line of the second stanza “Because it was grassy and wanted wear” as if the road is human, and that it wants to wear, the use of descriptive words by the poet allows the reader to use their sense of sight such as “diverged in a yellow wood” “it was grassy” “equally lay in leaves, the image of the road helps the reader visualize the road.
This poem allows the reader to relate to the situation and think back to a time when they had to make a decision and a very important choice. Therefore poetry conveys all different types of universal human issues and affects and impacts the reader due to personal past experiences, and the two poems Mother to son by Langston Hughes and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, convey very relatable universal human issues such as the journey of life, struggles, and making choices.
