After I moved to Gowanus, Brooklyn from my home country, India, I was just told briefly about U.S. gun policy and ownership. I was aware that 3 out of 10 American adults own a gun. But never realized I would have been hearing about gun violence so close to where I stay.
On Tuesday, October 15, I left from my university after my class to go home at 8:00 pm and decided to walk home, as I stay 15-20 minute’s walking distance from my university. As I was walking, I saw multiple helicopters and saw 5 cop cars with sirens blowing. I felt a little scared as I was alone. I decided to walk home as fast as I can and prayed to all my Gods to keep me safe. I decided to read news to see what had happened in my neighborhood that has caused such chaos.

I read there was shooting in Gowanus where police were involved. A resident in Gowanus was seen shooting one other person and shot police as well right after they came to the scene. The police officers shot the man in return multiple times. He was rushed to the Brooklyn Hospital Center with the other person. The person rushed to the hospital was released from prison just the week before, where he served for five years for a robbery and had an extensive criminal record. After reading this I was terrified and realized how scary it could have been if I would have left 20 minutes earlier from my university.
I started reading other news of gun violence in Brooklyn to see if the statistics were high. And realized it was more common than I thought it was. On October 13, two days before this incident there was another incident of gun violence over losing a game of poker in illegal gambling location in Utica Brooklyn, where four people were killed. There was another gun violence just weeks before this one which took place in Brownsville where a man was killed.
I did not feel safe after reading all this news. I realized why 30% of the population has a gun. But it might be safer if people were evaluated properly for owning a gun. Guns in right hands are not threat but in wrong hands can cause violence. Proper evaluation of gun ownership could avoid all these dangerous incidences and make the people feel safe.
