Introduction

Christopher Marlowe or other than accepted personality is accepted as one of the greatest dramatists in the Renaissance period of the invention of English blank verse and the English tragedy. Marlowe is high and will stand forever Born in Canterbury in 1564, Marlowe was an actor, poet, and playwright during the region of Britain's Queen Elizabeth.

The Myth of Icarus mentioned in the Chorus

Chorus. Not marching in the fields of Thrasymene, Where Mars did mate the warlike Cartage’s; Nor sporting in the dalliance of love, In courts of kings where the state is overturned; Nor in the pomp of proud audacious deeds, Intends our Muse to vaunt her heavenly verse: Only this, gentle. we must now perform The form of Faustus’ fortunes, good or bad: And now to patient judgments we appeal, And speak for Faustus in his infancy. Now is he born of parents base of stock, In Germany, within a town called Rhodes: At riper years, to Wittenberg, he went, Whereas his kinsmen chiefly brought him up So much he profits in divinity, That shortly he was graced with doctor’s name, Excelling all, and sweetly can dispute In the’ heavenly matters of theology; Till sworn with cunning, of a self-conceit, His waxen wings did mount above his reach, And, melting, heavens conspired his overthrow; For, falling to a devilish exercise, And glutted now with learning’s golden gifts, He surfeits upon cursed necromancy; Nothing so sweet as magic is to him, Which he prefers before his chiefs bliss: And this the man that in his study sits.

Close of the play (C) act V

Faustus thinks to sell his soul but is advised by the Good and Evil Angels: Evil Angel and good angle argument carried and never ends likely. Mephistopheles tells Faustus that he needs to sign an official deed of his life with Lucifer, signed in his own blood. When his blood begins to congeal, he wonders if this is a message from God, as he does when words appear on his arm. He gives his soul to Mephistopheles, and becomes a 'spirit in form and substance', with great power. He wants to understand how hell fits under the heaven. Once he has power, Faustus immediately asks for a wife, but Mephistopheles will only give him a devil, dressed as a woman. Faustus asks for all the books of modern scientific knowledge, which show the glories of God's creation to him. Nonetheless, he finds he can not repent. Faustus asks Mephistopheles about the shape of the Universe, and Mephistopheles gives him a piecemeal version of what was then the accepted-geocentric version. He tells Faustus nothing he already knows. Mephistopheles refuses to answer Faustus' questions on the Creation of the Universe because he knows the answer will be God. The Good Angel tells him he still has time to repent if he can. Mephistopheles brings Lucifer and Beelzebub with him to persuade Faustus not to backslide: he is forbidden to name Christ, as the name takes away Lucifer's power. They bring him the Seven Deadly Sins to tempt him.

Important changes in his character and attitude

Faustus is a contradictory character, capable of tremendous eloquence and possessed of awesome ambition, yet his over-pride, willful blindness, and endless desire make him go astray. He rejects all medieval authorities - Aristotle in logic, Galen in medicine, Justinian in law, and the Bible in religion - and decides to strike on his own. To some degree, he is considered the first character on the Renaissance stage. In fact, Faustus represents the common people. Everyone is Faustus. To watch him in his life through the reincarnation of his desires, conflicts, and temptations, which is a modern man as well. Us, we must be aware of our weak ability, our imperfect intellect, and our inadequate knowledge. By proper methods, we can achieve our own values. Dr. Faustus is very important in literature and it continues to enrich our horizons. That is why it still has many critics' attention with such intensity compels.
