Going camping in the summer to take a break from the city is one of my favorite things to do in the summer but I could never imagine living in one of those small towns. It’s safe to say that I have been a city girl my whole life. I love the fast pace and how everyone always seems to be going somewhere and doing something interesting. When you are living in a smaller town away from the city everything seems simpler. However, many of the things I enjoy while camping would definitely become tiresome and I would miss my big city life if I were to stay for too long.
Accessibility is one of the most important things I need in order to stay productive and happy day to day. For example, if I need to go to the gym but the gym is far and I don’t have a car to get me there. I probably will not go and be in a “blah” mood. Daily errands like going to the grocery store or getting to the gas station become difficult in a small town if you do not have your own car because everything is farther away. Some small towns also have public transportation but that would make carrying your groceries hard; since you don’t go often you will have a week’s worth of food and toiletries to haul around. Even more, going to school and work would become drearier than it needs to be from the daily commute back and forth being so long. Alternatively, if you are living in the city, there are stores around every corner and within walkable distances. You may not even have to get your own car to get around because public transit, Uber, Lyft, or getting a cab is so easy to do.

Secondly, life in the big city is full of new and exciting opportunities. There are many more people to meet and attractions to see at festivals, movie theatres, and sports events. For example, you go to one of the many with festivals held in Toronto streets in the summer, the summer carnival CNE, Broadway shows, and even the circus comes into town! Nightlife in the big city is without a doubt going to be more lively, without so many more people to meet and places to go. In a smaller town, this excitement is most likely drowned in the fact that everywhere you go you are seeing the same people, and there just aren’t the same amount of experiences being offered. Financial opportunities are also more likely to be found in a big city than in a small town. Big cities like Toronto have a much higher demand for finding talent due to the many operating businesses. If you are in a small town that is more like the countryside, the jobs are going to be limited because the town isn’t building new establishments quickly.
Above all, big city life also means more variety. Whatever you’re craving to eat, you can get! Toronto has Little Italy, Koreatown, Little India, and many more to explore with countless activities day and night. You can walk the downtown streets and find numerous niche restaurants bars and events as well. Even if you are a homebody and prefer to stay in, the options are endless. With just the tip of your finger, you can easily order and deliver your favorite dishes to your home using one of the many available food delivery services like Ubereats, SkipTheDishes, or using a restaurant’s app or website. Living in a small town means you’re most likely cooking all your meals at home and eating out is going to be limited to mainly generic burger joints, steakhouses, and the occasional random Chinese buffet.
For these reasons: more opportunities, more accessibility, and a more exciting lifestyle, I prefer big city life over a small town. When visiting these small towns while on a summer trip I do really enjoy it but if I stayed longer than a week I think I would start going crazy.
