It was my sophomore year that I went from being a small-town girl to a big city girl. My family and I left my home of Eagle Pass, Texas and moved to Orlando, Florida. During the ten months of living there, I was very excited to have a fresh start in a bigger city. But I did not realize how different and hard it was to become situated there. Although I would reminisce about the small-town lifestyle, living in a city is a life-long opportunity I would rather take than stay in a small town. Large cities are more opportunistic and diverse than small towns; however, small towns give people more comfort and reliability than larger cities do.

Before I moved, I would always picture how different my life would be as if I grew up living in a bigger city. I saw how each day, the people in my small town, would always do their usual errands and hang out at the same spots. If my town grew ever became a city, would they change their lifestyles? Large cities have a greater variety of places to go and more opportunities to choose from than small towns have. In Orlando, I was happier to be able to hang out with my group of friends and do cooler things at different places. On our free days, we would shop around Disney Springs, walk around international drive or go roller skating. The indicators of Orlando, such as the entertainment and environment, refined the welfare of myself. They embellished how I was living, while in Eagle Pass my mind understated to be narrow-minded.

In addition to living in a large city is that large cities are more culturally diverse than in small towns. I was able to discover how more than one culture influenced Orlando’s placement and why it is important. Back in Eagle Pass, I only knew about my Mexican culture because the majority of the town was Mexican. Because Orlando was a touristic city, I saw how each Hispanic group like the El Salvadorians and the Ecuadorians spoke different types of Spanish and the custom differences. Yet despite the variety of cultures, I created many new friendships at school and learned new meanings from them. The first friendship I created at school was Raj, he is a Hindu who came from Brooklyn. He taught me how strict his religion has rules like not being able to eat beef because cows are sacred to them. In Eagle Pass, we all grew up knowing each other so creating different friendships was never an option because they knew everything about me.

Despite that I would prefer to live in a city over a small town any day, I can say that small towns do surround people with more comfort and security than a city does. In Eagle Pass, H-E-B or even the restaurants bought me with ease because they had the same aura each time. Whenever I lived in Orlando, I used to feel strange at every place I was at, because they had an odd vibe from them. Although Orlando made me very sociable with people, I could never put my trust, reliance or confidence into them. My neighbors and close friends in Eagle Pass guaranteed me that I was able to depend on them.

Even though large cities give people more options and cultural knowledge, small towns primarily feel more comfortable and safe. Since I moved back to my small town of Eagle Pass, I try to look on the bright side of being back by exploring the hidden features of my town and go out to create my opportunities. A chance I have is to make up for the lost memories I don’t have here. I know I will be moving soon again for college but I hope to spend my last days here as if I was leaving forever.
