Program Evaluation Project

To determine if the client’s needs are being addressed program evaluations are needed. There are a range of programs that exist that provide different services, similar services, or the same services but each program has different goals, and factors that are being addressed such as mental health diagnosis, and substance use and abuse.

Evaluations possess the ability to show different service providers how to effectively run their programs and also pinpoint and identify the areas that require improvement. “Program evaluation is used to assess and “render judgments about the value” (Fitzpatrick, Sanders, & Worthen, 2011) of the program. Formative and summative are the two types of program evaluation. The goal of the evaluation project is to evaluate the program at hand and to also use a formative evaluation allowing a better understanding of how to identify the goals, the needs, and the ultimate determination of the program’s effectiveness for the specific population that is being served.

Program

The Elements Behavioral Health Creating Extraordinary Lives is the program being evaluated. This has many different locations all over the country such as Pennsylvania, Utah, Florida, Texas, and California. This is a treatment program that works with individuals who are suffering from substance abuse, mental health diagnoses, and dual diagnoses. It has been reported that this program can provide high-quality care for individuals who suffer from both addiction and mental health disorders. This program uses evidence-based approaches that specialize in programs for their client's needs. The neurobiological focus allows the staff to provide symptom management which takes a closer look into the brain attempting to understand both one’s addiction and how their mental health processes things. One of the program's main goals is providing long-term recovery.

The therapies that are being provided are the major components of the program. The existing therapy techniques all depend on the client’s needs. The 12-step alternatives consist of; Drug and Alcohol Detox, Mood Disorder, Anxiety Disorder treatment, Depression and Mood Disorder Treatment, Dual Diagnosis Treatment, Trauma and Post post-traumatic stress Disorder Treatment, and a range of several additional programs. This program is accredited by the Joint Commission.

Logic Model

The Logic Model is a graphic flow chart that shows and organizes different portions of the program that are being evaluated. This writer will demonstrate the logic model using the alcohol and drug addiction portion of this program. This is being chosen due to this program has several different treatment options. Please see below.

Description

The proposed treatment plan is equivalent to a program evaluation. According to Knight, & Tetruat the development of this plan is first carried out and then presented to the business owners.

With the proposed plan the individuals receiving the services will complete a survey that will allow them to measure the level of care they are receiving, their progress in the program, their overall views identifying how they feel about the services being received, and last but not least an exit interview. According to Knight, & Tetrault SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound) goals will be created by the business owner. The resources identified in the logic model will produce output activities. Resources used will work as one to accomplish the set expected outcomes. The null hypothesis asks the question, treatment for substance abuse does not vary for the older population that is more interested in sobriety than the younger population of clients. Documentation of attendance in the required scheduled groups and activities will be measured. Therefore, the variables being measured are the participation as well as the attendance. Within-subjects design is where the actual surveys will be given to individuals of different ages who happen to have either drug or alcohol or both substance abuse issues. The focused age range that will be tested is ages 18-30 and 35-65. The validity of the course of treatment is what is being tested. The within-subjects design holds the most variability within the two groups, ultimately producing the manipulation of the independent variable due to the same participants showing the results of both of the group's scores (Jackson, 2016). Daily activities being performed by individuals in the program are the dependent variable while the independent variable is identified as the course of treatment being given. The correlated-groups T-test determines the means between the two samples to show that there is no difference in the scores. The standard deviation is the standard error of the differences in scores with the sampling distribution of mean differences between dependent samples in an experiment with two groups or subjects (Jackson, 2016). Cohen’s Test would also need to be computed, this test has both pros and cons. The pros of using this test produces a smaller sample size, lower variability, and greater statistical power is greater (Jackson, 2016). On the other hand, the cons of this test is that the test can have internal validity concerns.

Conclusion

The Elements Behavioral Health Creating Extraordinary Lives provides treatment with a variety of treatment options for several different mental health diagnoses and substance abuse issues. The program evaluation showed the company’s progress and how they can measure and accomplish their goals as well as feedback from the individuals they serve allowing them to provide their feedback on how they think their treatment is going. The goal of the evaluation project is to have a better understanding of the program, identify and work through the goals and needs, and last but not least determine if the program is effective for the specific population that is being served. The use of the Logic Model and the within-subjects designs in the research, as well as the correlated-groups T-test for statistical purposes, will show that the program helps substance abuse clients with little variance in the outcome. The hope is that all patients receive quality care upon discharge from the program with long-term recovery.
