Hiking is another adventurous outdoor hobby or experimental journey practiced by national and international backpackers in Nepal. Hiking burns additional calories and allows one to get a 'front-closer 'view of trees, hills, and snowy mountains. Hiking can be simply defined as a practice of walking through the trails running across rural or wilderness areas. The major objective of people while on a hike is to explore and enjoy the scenic beauty of Nepal. English speakers throughout the world are pretty familiar with the term 'Hiking' but their meaning varies in accordance to the origin. Now, let's understand a few differences in the usage of the term 'Hiking' in countries such as the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, New Zealand, and Nepal.

    • United Kingdom (UK)- The British native considers the word 'Hiking' to be out-of-fashion. Hence, they prefer the term 'hillwalking' or just 'walking' instead of 'hiking'.
    • Australia: The natives and non-natives of Australia call off-trail and on-trail hiking 'Bush Walking'.
    • New Zealanders: People landing at NEPAL from New Zealand use the term walking or bushwalking instead of Hiking. But, for longer or overnight walks (in trail/non-trails), they call it by the name 'tramping'.
    • Nepal: In Nepal 'hiking' is used for outdoor walks to hills or any other area. But, when you pack your back to walk to the mountainous region then it is known as 'Trekking'.

We may come across the terms 'cross-country hiking' and' backpacking'. These words can be considered synonyms to the word Hiking. In addition, many people use the term 'Thru-hiking' when they walk from one end to another end and then back of trails with longer lengths.

Many alluring natural attraction of Nepal is located at a distance. In many cases, no machines used for transportation can be used to reach over to the far-away location. One fine example is Annapurna & other mountain regions of Nepal. These naturally enriched and captivating places can only be conquered through the medium of land by hiking. If you are one of those enthusiasts who love to sense the natural beauty by all five human sense organs then hiking is the best adventure for you. In addition, hiking helps to reduce air and land pollution. When we take a tour of any exquisite land of beauty through the use of automobiles we normally tend to be distracted by the noise and smoke produced by the engine. Hence, to avoid different forms of vehicular intrusion and to take full pleasure in nature you have got to pick a hiking adventure in your tour to Nepal. And yes! Physical strength is a must when you have a plan to reach out to a place having lengthy trailways.

Hikers most often look for exquisite naturally rich areas to hike. Amusingly, the region selected for a hike by outdoor adventure lovers tends to be fragile and may hold some cultural aesthetic value to people residing there. Also, sometimes hikers unknowingly destroy the environment that they appreciate. Destruction of resources of nature by one individual may not damage the environment to its worst but similar action by a large number or group can reduce the beauty of nature.

In Nepal, protected areas have certain rules and regulations which is required to be followed by the guests. These rules are made to protect the greenery and endangered species living inside the area. Park rule forbids burning firewood, camping across restricted areas, disposing of human waste, and limiting on number of hikers daily.

Proper need of Human waste Management is something you should always remember when on a hike. Human waste tends to pollute the water resources found in particular regions and many other hikers tend to get sick when on trips. It is best advised to dig waste holes about ten to twenty-five centimeters and to top it with soil after use. This type of ground hole is commonly called 'Catholes'. Make sure to dig such holes about sixty meters away from lakes, rivers, and a pond as these preventive measures reduce the chances of contamination. And do not forget to mark it with a stick so that other hikers can use the same catholes.

Most hikers love to enjoy the symmetry and exclusive features of threatened animals and birds. Before entering into the endangered species zone, hikers are to learn and understand the nature of these species to avoid human-wildlife conflict.

Hikers do make an Impact to the natural environment where they are planning to travel to. So take into consideration the aforementioned points before you take a trip to any alluring natural region of Nepal. As an example, we can take into account the story of a backpacker from the Czech. In the year 2005, the backpacker traveled to a National Park in Chile. The traveler disobeyed the park rules used a handy stove and burned 7% of the forest area. Hence, we advise you to be one of the responsible hikers!

You may enjoy hiking alone but it's best advised to hike in a group. Why? Traveling in a group increases the safety of backpackers. While traveling with several 4-5 people many times one traveler interferes with the likes, dislikes, and satisfaction of another traveler. If you have been or think that this might happen to you as well go through our easy and good etiquette to resolve backpacker's interference. Please note that all situations below are hypothetical and may or may not relate to you:

If you and your group happen to meet another group at a steep region then there might arise a situation where both groups may not be able to decide which side of the trails is theirs and which is not. To make things simpler a rule has been established by the Trekkers Association of Nepal where troops moving upward have the power to select their way which is commonly known as 'Right to way.' But, this may be reversed if only two or smaller groups are moving the uphill.

While walking in a group, few move at a quicker pace than others. When the slow walker is forced to move quickly then there might arise a situation of cold war between the bag packers. As a hiker, one must know that walking faster than naturally raises the cause of injury as it increases fatigue and exhaustion. When two different types of walkers (slow and fast walkers) are on the same team it is best advised to walk by the speed of the slowest backpackers. If not then there is a high rate for the divided members of the group to lose one another during their trip. Before heading to the trekking group if you happen to identify that your group has diversified walkers it's best advised to hire a trekking expert to make sure everyone is safe.

When two unknown teams of backpackers meet on trails or off-trails it is best advised to exchange good courtesies with each other such as a smile, and a sound hello, you can also start small talks with one another.

Human nature differs accordingly, some trekkers like loud noise and sound but some don't. But while hiking across the areas where the mobility of wild and dangerous animals is high you must encourage loud noises as it reduces the chance of bumping into wildlife.

Gently move the tree branches and twigs when on a walk to the forest and dense vegetative area as the hardwoods might smash the face of backpackers behind you.

Do not camp on someone else private property without permission. It's better to stay on home stays and hotels across your trail routes.
