In ‘Franklin D. Roosevelt’ by Sue Vander Hook, Sue talks about Franklin’s life. She talks about his life before, after, and during presidency. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born January 30, 1882, to Sara and James Roosevelt in Hyde Park, New York. Sara had a very difficult delivery. She went into a coma before she delivered Franklin. The doctor and James both thought Sara and Franklin were going to die. Franklin was Sara’s only child but his father James has a son also named James that was 28 years old when Franklin was born. Sara was also 28 years old when she had Franklin.

The Roosevelts and Franklin’s mother both came from wealthy families. Franklin lived a very privileged life. As a child he attended Groton School a boarding school. At first, he had a hard time making friends until everyone found out his cousin was state governor, Theodore Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt later became the 28th President of the United States. Franklin Delano Roosevelt wanted to enroll in the navy after he graduated. However, his parents insisted he went to Harvard. Franklin went to Harvard to be a lawyer. He also attended Columbia Law School.

While at Columbia, Franklin married Eleanor, his 5th cousin. They actually met at a family party when they were young. When he first met her, he said she was shy, but later on he met her again and started to have strong feeling for her. When he finally proposed marriage to Eleanor, she took a few days to respond.

Eleanor and Franklin went on to make a family. First, came their daughter Anna. Next, they had a son named James (after Franklin’s father). Then, they had a second son they named him Franklin Jr. The baby died when he was only 8 months old of pneumonia. Next, there son Elliott was born. Then, Franklin and Eleanor’s 4th son was born and they also named him Franklin Jr. Finally, their 5th son was born and they named him John.

In the summer of 1921, while on vacation with his family at Campobello Islands, Maine, Franklin Delano Roosevelt contracted polio. He was 39 years old. Polio left his legs paralyzed, but he had use of his upper body. Most of the time Franklin used a wheelchair, but he could stand with braces and a crutch. He did not want the American people to know he was a cripple because he didn’t want them to think he was weak. So, when he walked with crutches everyone thought he broke his leg they did not think it was anything major like polio. When he walked to the stage, he had help from his son then he walked the rest of the way.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt became state senator of New York in 1910. His cousin Teddy Roosevelt had been in this position 30 years before. During his time as a senator, he convinced the United States to go into World War I. He was a part of the League of Nations.

After he was paralyzed from polio Franklin was elected Governor of New York, in 1928. A year later the New York Stock Exchange crashed, causing the Great Depression. Millions of Americans lost their jobs. They became homeless and could not even afford food for their families during the Great Depression. Roosevelt asked for $20 million from the state for a Temporary Emergency Relief (TERA), in 1931. TERA also gave jobs to Americans. For the people who couldn’t find jobs it gave then food, a place to stay, and clothes.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected the 32nd President of the United States. He took office in 1932, with Louis Howe as his Vice President. Franklin created the New Deal to help people and the economy after the depression. World War II started on September 1, 1939, the United States wasn’t part of it until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, “...December 7, 1941–a date which will live in infamy…”. Roosevelt came up with the idea of the United Nations to keep peace. He died before the end of World War II and before the United Nations started. He died while in office, April 12, 1945, at the age of 63. In Georgia at Warms Spring.

In conclusion, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was one of the most influential presidents in United States history. Roosevelt did not live to see World War II. He was well loved. When he was young, he wanted to follow in his cousin Theodore Roosevelt’s footsteps and that is what he did. Roosevelt was the only president the was elected 3 times. Roosevelt made the United States a world superpower. Everyone said he was one of the greatest presidents to ever live but he led one of the harshest wars in history.
