“Know yourself for the unexamined life is not worth living” - these are the words of Socrates. He was an ancient Greek philosopher who was known as one of the greatest figures of Western philosophy. What he said promotes that we, human beings, should strive to know ourselves and understand who we truly are. We should question and examine ourselves by exploring life and doing things that can help us know more about ourselves. Some find themselves on pilgrim missions while doing things that they think they’re passionate about, while some go for adventures by themselves and only by themselves. Does solitude alone help in knowing ourselves? Thinking about this, other people say that they’re going to find themselves by being alone and at peace, but is that the only way? Would we really find ourselves in that way?
In order to become fully human means to use our high trait of being rational to raise our existence above all animals. Because if we don’t think, we are nothing more than animals who are simply eating, sleeping, working, and procreating. Self-examination is a significant part of our growth. Socrates’ statement encourages us to have questions in ourselves such as who we really are, what we really want for ourselves, what matters most in our lives, and other questions that unlock information and knowledge about ourselves. Solitude and peace for me are not a way of finding ourselves, because if we think of it, being alone and at peace just simply means, as it is, that you are at peace and alone. I think that examining oneself should involve efforts and actions. It is a journey that we should do, a path that we all should take. I believe that as we take up and continue through our journey, there are a lot of things or situations that slowly unfold pieces of information about ourselves that we don’t know yet. I believe that in examining selves, facing struggles is one of the contributors. Struggles are challenges that we should overcome, it is a provocation. But, regardless of the challenge, facing up to it and procuring lessons is the key and the most important in experiencing them. Doing so will make you recognize and appreciate the value of what you have. Facing obstacles or challenges and being able to overcome them give us the experiences that make up our lives. Growth in life and the most important lessons you will learn will come when you face and deal with a problem.

What Socrates argues, from what I perceived, is that we should constantly question ourselves and the world around us so that we can understand what is essential. It may not mean to question ourselves on the same subject throughout our lives, but rather look at everything new and important happening to us and try to understand it, through observation, analysis, and being fearless to what might come in our way. We should embrace tests or struggles that will come our way. All of these can help us discover who we truly are and learn more about ourselves.
