The Harlem Renaissance is following racial injustice and in the play, it shows that. When Mr.Lindner showed up at the Youngers home he tried to convince them not to move into the new home because they would be the first “African American” family to move into that neighborhood. Although he tried to make his statement convincing and non-threatening, he still offended them when they figured out he was there to make them leave. Although they were not going to cause any violence, he tried “protect the community “ by trying to make them not move in by offering them money.
The play A Raisin in the Sun extends the Harlem Renaissance in many ways. In the Harlem Renaissance, they do talk about the Black culture but in the play, they extend it in ways the play didn't. Beneatha is interested in Joseph Asagai because he is African and she plans on finding out some part of her identity through him. He plans on going back to Nigeria and wants her to go with him. Walter ends up getting drunk and making fun of the African culture because she does plan on going back with him the play does treat them both as equally serious and sympathetic. It shows how Beneatha is really considering going with Asagai, she plans on actually being successful and she’s basically making her life plan. African Americans were and are being shown as a lower class but Beneatha is showing that they are able to become successful and not what everyone thinks they are. They extend the black culture in the play more than in the Harlem Renaissance.

In the poem, Beneatha criticizes Mama for giving all of the money to Walter. Since Walter lost all of the money she’s very upset that all of her money that was supposed to go to school was lost. Although Walter did what made sense to him, mama should have known by the way Walter has been acting that he would have messed it up and should not have trusted him. This is showing gender inequality that extends beyond the Harlem Renaissance.
