I want you all to take a look at these two pictures right here, while you do that I also want you to think about what you see. Now, I want you to do the same but with these two pictures instead. Now, what if I told you that all of these fruits have been undergoing centuries of selective gene editing and that these are what they naturally were? The truth is, the process that got us from those fruits to these fruits, is a primitive form of genetic modification and by definition, this means that these fruits are GMOs. But do the benefits it can bring to modern-day society outweigh the risks?
Before any of you jump to conclusions, let's back up a little. The definition of a GMO is to genetically modify an organism. That means that we have, somehow, added in some genes or taken them out or just done something to change the genome of the organism to give it different particular traits. But even though a lot of us don't know what a GMO is, this science and technology has become a massive part of today's modern society. I also believe that the majority of us in this room have different kinds of opinions about this topic, is it good or is it bad? And the best act we can do when we face a situation, discussion, or problem without any inside information is anything, but going against it.

One of the main reasons why people often get negative while talking about GMOs is because of social media coverage, where most of the information that comes out to the audience looks like this. A lot of angry people on the streets, yelling about how we should say no to GMO and so on. Loud and very angry - so it must be something dangerous.
I believe the reason why the term GMO has become so stigmatized, is because it´s been put into the food industry in this negative term for the mistreatment of produce in animals. But if we once again take a closer look at the modifying fruits, the only thing that modern genetic modification is doing is giving us a free way to evolution and human favor. And instead of waiting centuries for something to modify or evolve itself to our liking, we´re just speeding up the process. In the end, its only true purpose is to make our lives easier, simpler, and better.
Now I´m not saying that we should go out and mutate everything without any regard like public safety, health, or ethics because you know, even I don't think that would work out well. But 81 percent of stem professionals think that genetic modification is already safe and only 31 percent of the general public thinks that it even has the potential to be safe, that says something. That says we might need to reconsider and by that, choose to do something so we can start to get things moving. And as society´s new generation, we have the responsibility to decide what will be acceptable and what won't be acceptable.
We have to believe that genetic modification can start saving lives in working near miracles, at least publicly until we say it's okay. It´s now our responsibility to take on the stigmas of genetic modification. So, let's get started.
