Banksy, now a renowned and established graffiti street artist, was born in Bristol, United Kingdom in 1974. He is also known for being a political activist and a film director. Although his full identity still remains unknown, the possible names of Robert Banks and Robin Gunningham have been widely speculated. Banksy had joined a Bristol graffiti group in the 1990s which started to fully launch his street art career. As I will further elaborate, Banksy’s art uses unique techniques and he creates extremely symbolic pieces in many cities all across the world.
Firstly, allow me to explain the creative process and purpose behind all of Banksy’s masterpieces. He makes special stencils for all of his different shapes and colors. He is able to layer these multiple stencils and uses spray paint in order to make his images come to life. Almost all of his works have been done on a brick wall within a city in the United Kingdom where they can be viewed and pondered upon by everyone. But the absolute most unique characteristic of his creative process is that he does everything anonymously. He makes all of his pieces without being seen by anyone. People are only able to identify him by the nickname he leaves on some of his paintings, “Banksy”. Most of his works also incorporate the element of juxtaposition. Juxtaposition can be described as putting two items in close proximity in order to give something a contrasting effect. This is really what makes most of his works stand out from other forms of art. By using this contrasting element, he brings controversy, realization, and deep thinking into the pieces.

Due to all of the attention Banksy’s art pieces received, he has been noticed and even selected for Time magazine’s list of the top 100 most influential people. This truly shows the amount of publicity he has received and the benefits that have come to him because of it. Since he has been recognized for being influential by an even more influential magazine, he has had an even greater impact on people’s thinking and ideals. All art is created in order to convey some type of message, Banksy’s art just conveys strong messages on a much larger scale than most. This again is because of the placement, size, and topic that he implements within the art, as well as the attention he has received from people all across the globe.
A full documentary has even been made all about the life of Banksy. The film is called “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. Even the film's name depicts the type of humor and juxtaposition that he incorporates into his normal street art. It was also released in 2010 and filmed by a French videographer named, Thierry Guetta. The film gives us further insight into Banksy’s process and thinking behind his art. It also depicts how his modern art has had an influence on today’s society. Three awards have been given to this documentary and have gone through even more exposure. This film has gained popularity and has remained influential in people’s views on art and society since its release.
