Some mothers are role models. Both of the mothers in Fish Cheeks by Amy Tan and My Mothers Garden by Katlin Greenridge were role models because they both wanted what is best for their daughters and both of them are different from everyone else but they still make the best of things.
In Fish Cheeks, the mom doesn't want her daughter to be something she isn't. She doesn't want her daughter to try to change just to impress the opposite family. In My Mother's Garden, the mom goes back to school to try to get them out of welfare. She is also a really honest person and she has tried to retain something from her past life in the middle-class even when her daughter didn't.In Fish Cheeks, Amy's mother was a role model because she gave her daughter a speech about how she could seem like the American girls on the outside 'But inside you have to always be Chinese. you have to be proud that you are different. Your only shame is to own shame.' She wants what's best for Amy even if she doesn’t love it. Amy's mother doesn't want her daughter to be something she isn't.

In My Mother's Garden, Katlyn's mother was a role model because she decided to go back to school to try to pull them out of welfare. 'She didn't want us to remain in this public housing forever.' She wanted her and her daughters to travel back to the middle class. She also wanted to go to school and obtain a degree. She only wants the best for her daughters. She was also honest. She didn't want her daughter to deceive people. She also planted a garden to retain something from her past life. Some people would say that in Fish Cheeks, Amy's mom wasn't a role model because invited Robert and his family over albeit she knew that Amy had a crush on him. She also outdid 'herself in creating a wierd menu.' they'd say that in My Mother's Garden, Katlyn's mom wasn't a good role model because she broke the rules by keeping a computer. it had been 'hidden under piles of bedsheets, faraway from any windows, in a very dark corner of my mother's bedroom.” These statements aren't true because while Amy had a crush on Robert, her family was trying to get to know the minister and his family better and Katlyn's mom was just trying to make the most of the pc and not waste it. A role model is someone that you respect and you would like to be like and also care about them. The mothers in Fish Cheeks and My Mother's Garden are role models because they both want what's best for her daughters. they're also different from everyone else but still make the most of it.
In Fish Cheeks, Amy's mother doesn't want her to change just to fit in. She wants her daughter to only be herself. In My Mother's Garden, Katlyn's mother is working a fulltime job and is going back to school to try to pull them out of the public housing. In my opinion Both mothers are great mothers considering their circumstances and their lifestyles despite the fact that they both face challenges. They both had things that they had to overcome like in fish cheeks in poverty. Both daughters were embarrassed in their situation.
