  • Central idea/Thesis: Electric cars will people save money and they will also help cut back on greenhouse gases and reliance on foreign oil.
  • Organizational Pattern: Problem, Cause, Solution

Introduction

Reveal topic: The topic that I will be speaking on today is electric vehicles.

Credibility Statement: According to Christina Nunez from National Geographic (2019) “Humans have pumped enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere over the past 150 years to raise its levels higher than they have been for hundreds of thousands of years.”

Relevancy statement: Most people only knew the basics about electric vehicles and how they work.

Preview: So today I will be speaking to you all about the problems that branch from gas-powered vehicles. I will also be defining what electric cars are, and how they work,(Finidsh this)

Transition sentence to the body of speech: So without any further ado.

Body

I. Gas-powered vehicles cause air pollution which in turn plays a huge role in other issues.

Passenger vehicles (gas-powered cars) have assisted in generating so much carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. This in turn causes helps aid air pollution. Air pollution is defined as particles found in the air that don’t belong there.

1. Some effects include health issues and environmental issues also. effects of the problem?)

Air pollution has been linked to higher rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory diseases such as asthma. (Nunez,2019)

Climate Change is another effect of air pollution.

2. In the U.S. nearly 134 million people—over 40 percent of the population—are at risk of disease and premature death because of air pollution, according to American Lung Association estimates. (Nunez,2019)

B. This problem is important because it poses a risk to people’s health and the environment.

This problem is global and it affects certain people and the environment.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists (2014) “Nearly one-half of all Americans—an estimated 150 million—live in areas that don’t meet federal air quality standards.”

Air pollution can cause heat waves, extreme weather, food supply disruptions, more Farley linked to disease and so much more.

3. The people who are most affected by air pollution are children, the elderly, sick people, and pregnant women.

A. Poor air quality increases respiratory ailments like asthma and bronchitis, heightens the risk of life-threatening conditions like cancer, and burdens our healthcare system with substantial medical costs. (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014)

B. The consequence intel of a lot of things. “Air pollution has a major impact on the process of plant evolution by preventing photosynthesis in many cases, with serious consequences on the purification of the air we breathe.” (Ompe, 2017) “In particular, air pollution can cause cardiovascular problems, allergies, asthma attacks, conjunctivitis, bronchial diseases, lung or skin cancers, vision problems, blood. Problems in the mental development of the child, among others.”(Ompe, 2017)

“I grew up in Los Angeles in the 50s and 60s. I remember days when the air pollution was so bad your eyes would burn and it hurt – actually was painful – to take a deep breath. Combine that with the heat and a shining grey sky that beat down on you, where the soup was so thick all you could see of the sun was a diffuse bright patch in the sky, where even the grass turned brown and the trees died from the pollution, and you have a hell on earth of the sort described by Tolkien when he wrote about the wastelands of Mordor.” (readers & Perry, 2017)

Transition sentence to main point 2: Now we will move on to the cause behind this issue.

II.The cause of these issues is engines in gas-powered cars.

A. Gas cars run off of an engine. It has a gas tank that is near the back of the car. This then runs to the engine. The gas is used to power the engine. Once the gas makes it to the engine, then it goes to the transmission which gives power to the wheels. When the gas has been utilized it runs through the exhaust pipe and it is transformed into a gas fume known as exhaust. Once the exhaust is released into the air it is then considered air pollution.

“The first gasoline-fueled, four-stroke cycle engine was built in Germany in 1876.” (Melosi, n.d) This is when it first came about.

As more and more cars get onto the road this means that more air pollution is being released into the air.

Transition sentence to main point 3: We can now transition over to the solutions to this issue.

III. The solution to this problem is to invest in an electric vehicle.

A. According to Hybrid Center Team (2019) “The term ‘electric car’ is rather a broad term as it can cover many different types of electric cars.” The different types of electric cars are Battery Electric Vehicles, Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, Hybrid Electric Vehicles, and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles. Today I am mainly focused on Battery Electric Vehicles and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles Battery electric vehicles “Are fully electric vehicles that produce no emissions or waste products while driving.”They rely solely on electrical energy stored in the battery packs for all the functions in the car.”(Hybrid Center Team,2019) Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles “These are also fully electric vehicles and they draw the electric current to run the motor from a fuel cell. The fuel cell generates electrical current from the electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. These don’t cause CO2 emissions, but they do produce steam or water vapor as it is a by-product of the chemical reaction.”(Hybrid Center Team,2019) These cars are a solution because they don't have a true engine in the car that can cause emissions to be emitted. “In contrast to other electric vehicles, FCEVs produce electricity using a fuel cell powered by hydrogen, rather than drawing electricity from only a battery.” (U.S. Department Of Energy, n.d) They run off of a battery and fuel cell or hydrogen, which then turns an electric motor. This is safer for the environment and society as a whole.

This solution fits the problem because it would reduce or all in all cancel the harmful exhaust emitted by gas-powered cars. According to Brinson (2019),” Emissions from cars increase the levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.”So by driving electric cars then we would then lower the amount of air pollution that we have in our environment.

The solution can be put into action by you buying an electric car next time you are considering buying a car or by informing someone that you know is buying a car or considering it.

You can save so much money and also the environment if you follow these 4 steps here:

  1. Consider the benefits that an electric car would have for you personally.
  2. Research which electric car would be best for you.
  3. Invest in an electric car.
  4. Tell your friends and family members to consider buying one too.

It will cost you time and money, definitely money, but it will all pay off in the end. You will save money and the environment. It will also take some getting used to.

B. So imagine yourself cruising down the street knowing how your wallet is thanking you and how the world is thanking you too. You will be saving money and helping the world stay a little longer.

You will save money. This is a big impact and you will be helping to reduce the amount of air pollution released into the atmosphere.

The effects will not happen overnight, let me tell you that. It will take a lot of time but it will be worth it in the long run.

You will also be driving an overall safer car. According to Ergon Energy, “Recent findings have shown that several EV features can improve safety. EVs tend to have a lower center of gravity which makes them less likely to roll over. They can also have a lower risk for major fires or explosions and the body construction and durability of EVs may make them safer in a collision”

Conclusion

Transition sentence to conclusion So with all of this in mind

Restate Main points: I have talked about the issues that gas cars cause as far as air pollution, how they cause the problems and who they affect most, and the solutions that could fix the issues which are driving an electric car.

Restate Proposition Statement: You can save so much money and also the environment if you follow these 4 steps here:

  1. Consider the benefits that an electric car would have for you personally.
  2. Research which electric car would be best for you.
  3. Invest in an electric car.
  4. Tell your friends and family members to consider buying one too.

Concluding remarks: So whenever you go search for a vehicle, don't give a couple of grand a chance to get in the way of you saving far more money than that over the long haul. The electric vehicle is something everybody should look into and acquire, for us as well as for the earth we live in.
