Through the effects of revolutions, natural disaster and just the mere greediness of corporations and government personnels in power, creates a futuristic world of exaggerated control within dystopian literacy. Its world is usually positioned in an apocalyptic setting or hidden under utopian world, generally due to the cause of war, revolutions or natural disasters. Powerful, rebellious and influential protagonists are depicted throughout the text within dystopian literatures as evident in their personality traits, the environment of different dystopian societies and their internal recollection; emphasising the negative peculiarities of dystopian societies. Their personality traits often diverge from other characters through their perspective and the way they think, in which can be emphasised through their living environment.

Throughout dystopian literature, protagonists have three main personality traits that can are obtained naturally, that is; curiosity, courage and leadership. The curiosity is naturally fuelled with an active brain, usually caused by their past or the change in society. This builds up their courage, when answers of forbidden questions are answered or partly answered, to change or fix the society. The protagonists always have a goal and are always high achievers, and until that goal is accomplished, they will not stop in what they are doing. In a document article, Definition and Characteristics - Read, Write and Think, they have mentioned some personality traits in which the characteristics of dystopian protagonists are often afraid of something, that they feel trapped and have the urge to escape, are always questioning the social and political system, have a sense of paranoia and are always recollecting in their internal monologues. This is corroborated through the books of Jessica Shirvington with the two seiries, Disruption and Corruption, where throughout the two books, Maggie, the protagonist, is depicted as a strong, agile and determine character. Throughout her journey, she shows her determination to find answers as to why her father was taken by the M-Corp with very vague explanation to which she has a goal to find him, “The passion and fierceness you have for the people you love… he’s so lucky.”(Shirvington J. , 2014). Through the “passion and fierceness” (Shirvington J. , 2014), they are vulnerable and scared. They keep their past and present stories and actions to themselves in order to prevent hurt and to intently keep other characters safe from them. However, this often leads to the opposite for their goal, causing miscommunication, mistrust and loss. This can also be seen throughout Shirvington’s book series. Nonetheless, despite their emotions and concern, the common theme of protagonists vulnerability through attributes of leadership and sometimes dominance. Like Disruption, Corruption, The Giver and the Divergent series, the protagonists are followed by characters that are not entirely controlled (Dystopia, 2019). Despite natural or environmental influenced personality traits, actions, and forbidden curiosity caused by the dystopian societal situations, these protagonist are depicted by their common personality traits throughout society in dystopian literature.

Within the dystopian world in literature, there are common varieties of themes from governmental control, technological control, loss of individualism and the cause of nuclear disaster (Hughes, 2009). Throughout the range of dystopian literature, these themes intertwine together with elements of danger, adventure, uncertainty and survival. The protagonist’s personality changes and rebuilds them, whether good or bad, often leading to revenge and/or a fight for freedom, in which are built around the foundation of the dystopian society; often having a prologue containing war, revolution, natural disasters, and other civil and political conflicts(Dystopia, 2019). With governmental, technological and nuclear disaster, often creates a society in dystopian literature, controlled by technology, set in an apocalyptic or futuristic setting and manipulated by government or corporations in power. These can be depicted though the characteristics of the protagonist’s curiosity, slowly unrevealing the internal political and social system. In Shirvington’s novel series, the author creates leads for the protagonists to unravel the works underneath the social and political system, by showing sub-characters who are not entirely controlled. This can be seen through the author’s novel when Quin, one of three main characters, is shown the brutal torture and treatment, known as the cleaning day, of the ‘negs’, who are assumed to be dangerous. Through the causes and effect of different themes of dystopian literature, the characteristics of the protagonist is emphasised and made obvious, depicting their attributes.

Throughout the different dystopian theme, a common trend of internal monologue opens the protagonist for the reader to understand their actions and opinions. This causes the reader to see the vulnerability of the character, persuading the audience to believe and agree on their opinions and actions. The literature usually includes flashback or insight to their past, bringing out raw emotions and weaknesses of the protagonist, which can be seen in Shirvington’s series on Disruption, in recollection through her mind, “ The person staring back at me was a stranger. Someone who had taken the girl I was two years ago and stripped her down only to rebuild a different person. Now I was strong, I was capable and smart. They were the good qualities. But I was also calculated, manipulative and selfish. There were the things I promised myself I wouldn’t be. After we found him. After we put this right.” (Shirvington J. , 2014). Through their intention and determination, are often combined with a touching back story that is effected by the dystopian society, bringing out and emphasising their intentions, drive and values. Through their internal monologue, their expression of their opinion on the negative aspects of dystopian society are amplified and advanced, “But people should have the right to become whatever they are going to be before they are judged and sentenced.” (Shirvington J. , 2014), throughout the literature as they find more answers to their curiosity. The insight of the protagonists’ thought process show the vulnerability, emotional, growth and maturity of their characteristics, depicting throughout the dystopian literature.

In conclusion, with rebellious and courageous actions, the effects and environment of the protagonists’ dystopian society depicts their characteristics within the texts of dystopian literature. Through numerous themes of dystopia, can not only take what’s left of the protagonists, but could bring out different personality traits in which changes their character, whether for the better or worse. In this analytical essay, contains three arguments in which supports the hypothesis by explaining the personality traits in which are depicted from dystopian text, how it can be enhanced through the cause of dystopian society, and the recollection of internal monologue to which they reiterate in order to indirectly persuade the reader to accept their opinions and actions.
