Many adults like to focus on the cons of technology and how it’s not good for the new generations to be spending so much time on it. They especially always talk about how technology should be banned at school and then further go into their ranting process about this subject as if technology is evil. But, have they ever thought about how the usage of technology in schools is helping in many ways?
Technology is helping many students in the new generations gain more relevant sources for school, instead of using outdated information from textbooks. “Speaking at Mooresville Middle School, NC, President Obama said, ‘I want to see more apps that can be instantly updated with academic content the day it’s available, so you don’t have old, outdated textbooks with student names still in them from years ago. These are the tools that children deserve,’” (Obama,2013). Even former President Obama, who is a very wise leader and who is looked up to by many, agrees that technology can help students get more updated information. Although textbooks were a good source, technology can be a better source and help students by giving them current information to help them go further into their education than old textbooks ever have.

One of the most common problems in classrooms is tired, unfocused, and uninterested students. I know many of my friends and I go to school and are tired from the night before because of all the homework. Then, to have to sit in class the whole day listening to the teacher talk is a pain in the butt, and it makes us very bored. However, we can fix this problem, by getting the students more involved in their work instead of just having the teacher talk the whole class time. “Using a computer, tablet, or other device encourages self-directed learning and creates an active participant in the learning process, rather than the passive learners found in a lecture environment. Interactive lesson plans can help turn “boring” conceptual subjects like math and science into fun, engaging, and educational activities for students,” (Capella University, 2017). Being able to walk into school and into class interested in what you’re going to be doing every day because the use of technology has changed the way you learn for the better; makes students very excited. Technology has changed the way they learn in class and view the class, and if they are interested in what they’re doing they will retain the information better.
Although, not only can technology benefit students but it can also benefit the school by saving the school money. Every day students’ schedules are filled with many assignments, and throughout the year tons of paper is being used. '‘One girl was printing 300-400 pages per lab, per day, and going to multiple labs each day,’ says Craig Sauvigne, an IT Department system administrator for Winthrop University, a public university with over 6,000 students in Rock Hill, South Carolina. ‘Costs for paper, ink, toner, and printer maintenance were mounting, and we discussed turning off the printers,’ says Sauvigne. ‘Of course, we couldn't because legitimate printing serves an academic need,’' (Williams,2012). Many people reacting to this situation would just tell the school to make the students print the paper out at home. However, many students don’t have the same access to printers as others may have. Also, labs and class assignments are done in class and most students don’t know what assignment they’re doing in class each day so they can’t print it the night before. Yet, this can all be prevented with the help of technology. Now, you can use technology to do assignments online and submit them online, including assignments like labs and simulations for science. This will help reduce the need and usage of printers, which will result in buying less paper, ink, toner, and printer maintenance. Although the need for printers will never go away, at least the usage of technology will make a difference and can be a part of the solution.
On the contrary, even if technology can help students; will students be able to take care of the technology? One of the main risks of involving technology in schools is the risk of damage to the technology. “Many opponents of digital textbooks question their durability. Broken digital textbooks require repair by experienced technicians, which can be costly and time-consuming and put a strain on school districts’ IT departments,” (Greenfield,2013). Young students tend to be careless and reckless and don’t often think of the consequences of the damage. This is a big concern to schools because this damage will cost the school a lot of money and the school may even have to take away the technology if the damage of technology continues. However, there’s a solution to every problem. We can avoid students being reckless by making the family of each student pay for the damage the student has caused to the technology. If schools make the family pay, the parents will be more strict about how the students take care of the technology because the parents will not want to pay a lot of money for the damage. Making the family pay will also help the school because the school will no longer have to pay a lot of money for the damage to each student's technology.
