“Significant experience” – Highlight an important quality that you possess, which is vital for success in your professional life. How has this quality been expressed in the past and how do you express it today?
Ever since humans have lived in groups there have been leaders at the head of these factions, during prehistoric times the leader was the strongest man who was in charge of hunting and getting food for the rest of his tribe. The image of the leader has changed with time, we started to recognize the authority of political and religious leaders that help absolute power – nowadays leaders of our society are the ones we elect for our countries. However, being a leader is not something that suits anyone and everyone. Leadership is a skill that is acquired, practiced, and perfected over time; it is also a quality that I possess and which to talk to you about in this essay.

In the ever-evolving work environments of our present society leadership skills are mandatory in order to be able to be able to work in efficient teams. A good leader is a leader that one respects but that one is not afraid of; gaining your co-workers’ respect sets up a trusting and respectful work environment. Hence making your co-workers more apt to come to you with their ideas and criticism to make the workplace better. Furthermore, a team that trusts and respects each other is a team that is more efficient and capable to adapt to any unforeseen events that may happen. Being in such a mindset at work motivates yourself and your co-workers and sets a productive trend in the office. I think it is also important to highlight that people that are more productive tend to be more satisfied with their job thus working harder and better.
The French school system, which I have been part of, puts a fairly strong emphasis on group work and goes as far as having a project done in groups count as part of the final Baccalaureate mark. This project called the TPE: “Travaux Personnels Encadrés” is a project done in groups of three about any scientific theme (In the scientific stream at least). The fact that most students are 16-17 years old, have six months to prepare the project, and are teamed up with their friends means that without proper leadership skills, the project will be, at best, started 3-4 weeks before the due date and will not be as exceptional as it could have been. What I mean is that the project is six months long because you are expected to make advanced research and not just read from Wikipedia – you are also encouraged to meet people (scientists that can help you with your topic in our case) in order to present an above average and original project. I am very proud to say that I helped my two groupmates plan and direct our work so we would have a consistent workflow throughout the duration of our project.
As for the past use of my leadership skills, there is one event in my life where I think they shone especially bright, during my Terminale year my school was hosting a cultural show about cultural diversity in our country (Mauritius being an ex-colony of Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom and had workers brought from India the diversity is exponentially larger than in other places) and I was asked three days before the show if I could host it; hosting a talent/diversity show was one of the things I really wanted to do while in school so I accepted. It turns out that getting accustomed to the order, the name, and the fillers between every piece was a challenge I had underestimated. In the end, it turned out very nicely in my opinion because I worked very hard with the performers to make the most out of the 4 rehearsals that we had.
In a nutshell, I am proud of the leadership skills that I developed during my 7 years of secondary education and I am looking forward to making the most of them as well as perfecting them throughout my higher education and professional career – indeed I think that this skill is a gateway to other skills and professional and educational success.
