A theme in each `Jumping Monkey Hill` and ` The Thing round Your Neck` was discrimination against women. `This used to be more of a center of attention in `Jumping Monkey Hill` however was in reality nonetheless present in `The Thing round Your Neck`. In each story, the lady protagonist was sexually harassed. In `The Thing around your Neck` Akunna left her uncle's house because he felt her up and desired to do more. On pages 116 to 117 it says ` `you uncle got here into the cramped basement` squeezing your buttocks` If you let him, he would do many matters for you. The smart female did it all the time. How did you suppose those girls back home in Lagos with well-paying jobs made it?` Akunna`s uncle tried to persuade her that the only way she should be successful, the only way any woman was once ever profitable was with the assistance of a man, and the way to get a man`s assistance was once via sexual favors.

In `Jumping Monkey Hill`, the sexual harassment of girls is present both in the story itself and in the story within the story that Ujunwa writes about herself. In `Jumping Monkey Hill` Edward Campbell makes Unjunwa uncomfortable with his remarks and the way he stares at her. On web page 106 it says `At first, Ujunwa tried no longer to note that Edward regularly stared at her body, that his eyes were in no way on her face but constantly lower.` This shows that Ujunwa is aware of and made uncomfortable by Edward's attention, however, is trying to bypass it. Then later on page 106, Ujunwa is speaking to Edward and he says ` I`d rather like you to lie down for me. The story continues with `Edward used to be grinning. Only the Ugandan and the Tanzanian had heard him.

Then the Ugandan laughed. And Ujunwa laughed, due to the fact it was once funny and witty, she instructed herself` `In this change Edward has made a blatant sexual comment to Ujunwa, smiling as he does so, and Ujunwa chooses to simply giggle it off, attempting to persuade herself that it is no longer serious, simply as she tries to ignore the way Edward stared at her body. Edward is in the role of electricity as the character in charge of the workshop and due to this fact, he has the ability to locate contacts in the publishing world for the writers. So in this situation, a man in power is taking gain of his electricity to sexually harass a woman, just as in `The Thing Around your Neck` Akunna`s uncle tried to use his strength to take benefit of her.

Furthermore, in `Jumping Monkey Hill` the story Ujunwa is writing which is certainly about herself in small print two incidences the place she was attempting to get a job and a man tried to use his role of energy to sexually harass her. In the first incident, she was making use of for a job and the man interviewing her presented her with the job but then groped her breasts, making it clear the provide was contingent upon her permitting things of this nature. In the 2nd incident, she is given a trial duration at a job and an everlasting function is contingent on her bringing in a sure amount of money. When she goes out to carry in the new accounts, she realizes that she is predicted to convey in customers through snoozing with them, and it will become clear that this is why women are employed for this job. I also assume it is of observing that she obtained the second job provided solely after going to her father and asking for his help in discovering a job. At the stop of `Jumping Monkey Hill` Edward criticizes Ujunwa`s story, saying it is an unrealistic portrayal of ladies as victims. This is when Ujunwa displays her story as being about her own experiences. I discover it huge that in `The Thing Around your Neck` and `Jumping Monkey Hill` there is a theme of guys attempting to use their positions of strength to take benefit of women.` In each story, it is implied by way of men that in order for a female to succeed she wishes for the assistance of a man. Adichie`s focal point on this in her testimonies makes it clear that this is a major trouble in Nigeria.
