Someone once asked me, why did I become a nurse, and the answer was very simple: I wanted to help the one in need. I didn't have strong health as a kid, and I often visited the hospital. The hospital was like a second home for me, and I grew to like the doctors and the nurses very much. Even though I dislike getting injections, I love playing with the syringe and stethoscope toy set my mom got me. It warms my heart every time I see it takes care of me attentively. Without a doubt, I knew health care was something I wanted to pursue as a career.

I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology at CUNY City College. After that, I worked for a translation company as a translator for different hospitals and healthcare systems, but I wanted to be able to directly care for patients. At the same time, I was married and had a little boy and he gave me motivation to strive higher. My son gave me the courage to start a second career in nursing, and I started to take classes at QCC. There were a lot of ups and downs on the way, however, I was determined to put everything I had to fulfill my dream. Everything paid off when I graduated from QCC as a CUNY SPS dual scholar. I haven’t yet started working as a registered nurse, but I am currently enrolled in CUNY SPS, BSN program and studying for my NCLEX in April. However, during clinical practice in QCC, I rotated to Med Surg, Pediatric, Maternity, Telemetry, and Surgery.

One of the nursing theorists who has helped drive my own philosophy was Madeleine Leininger. She was one of the newer theorists who first appeared in 1978. According to Leininger, the goal of nursing is to provide care congruent with cultural values, beliefs, and practices. She states that “care is essential in nursing”. According to her, “There can be no cure without caring, but there may be caring with curing” and I agree. Every patient is unique and individual.

Nurses should work toward an understanding of care, values, health beliefs, and lifestyles of different cultures. This will form a culturally specific care plan for each individual patient.

A competent nurse must stay up to date with research and literature, and use evidence-based practice to give the best care for our patients. As professional nurses, we must treat our environment, colleagues, and patients with dignity, kindness, respect, and compassion. Self-care is another entity that was not emphasized enough. As a professional registered nurse, I believe we should be responsible for our own care. When self-care is met a more stable mentality is formed. With a healthy mental state, we can utilize our full capacity to better care for our patients.

A community is a group of people that have different characteristics, ethnicities, or beliefs but share the same geography, location, or social interest. Public health is to focus on health prevention and health promotion to the people in the community. The healthcare arena has changed throughout the years, compared to the period in Florence Nightingale. Today not only do nurses care for individuality but also play a major role in public health nursing. Opportunities have expanded for nurses in leadership roles, and the education requirements in this arena have increased as well. Nursing is also needed to contribute to public health movements to elaborate on different cultures and ethnicities to improve well-being in the United States.

Nurses are professional individuals who use science and evidence-based practice to care for the patient’s physiological and psychological needs. Nurses practice autonomically in many fields by using nursing knowledge, experience, and critical thinking. Nursing in my opinion is an advocate for the patient. Nurses are the bridge between a patient and physician and the rest of the healthcare team. Nurses must be able to identify signs and symptoms that will jeopardize the patient's health. Patients are unique individuals influenced by their cultural background, psychosocial, and well-being. Patients who are not fully competent in their health will need to receive maximum care from the healthcare team to get a cure. The environment we provide for the patient should be kept clean and professional. A soothing environment should be maintained to improve the patient’s health. Hygiene is the number one safety to keep patients from contracting a second infection. In a healthcare team, the physician is a team leader that diagnoses and treats the patient. The physician also relies on nurses to take care of the patient and report any abnormality. I believe compassion and altruism should be a guide for all healthcare providers. It Is not easy for everyone to see other people's perspective but I believe having a sympathetic heart for every patient is crucial and always does no harm to the patient.

I cannot predict what will be like five years down the line but I know that I will continue in the health profession. I always wanted to do a medical missionary trip; to bring medical supplies and treatment to a country that is in need. My goal is to work as a pediatric nurse because I always have a heart for children. It breaks my heart whenever I see a sick child in the hospital. I want to give them the best care even just for a brief moment. Education is something I will keep advancing forward. My goal is I want to continue my education as a pediatric nurse practitioner and use my skills to alleviate pain for children.
