It’s 2019 and we live in a world that still sees a person and judge’s a person by the color of their skin or by their gender. Now,let’s step back in time fifty-something years ago. The lines have been drawn whites on one side and African Americans on the other. Where would you be at, would it be on the front battle line fighting for equality or shouting from a rooftop racial slur and spreading hate and despair?
“ We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given to by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed (King, 2).”
During this time of utter chaos, two separate civil rights leaders speak out on their beliefs, Reverend Jesse Jackson and Martin Luther King Jr. both spoke on the issues of violence, the media, and the will of the Negro people as a whole, in an effort to win support for the African American Communities. Martin Luther King Jr, his father was an important member of the black community in Atlanta and was a Baptist Minister, his family stressed the need of a firm education for the future generations. He attended a segregated school to learn, at the age of 15, King attended Morehouse college and graduated in 1948. Soon after, King continued his pursuit of knowledge at Croezer Theological Seminary and later graduated with honors-only to further his education by getting a doctoral degree in systematic theology in 1955. He made the world a better place for black citizens by doing non-violence movements and marched the way to freedom.
As a role of being president of SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Martin Luther traveled across the country and around the world giving lectures of non-violent protest and civil rights as well as meetings with religious figures, activists, and political leaders (Martin Luther King Jr., History). It's because of Martin Luther King and the efforts of his supporters that America came to understand the power of nonviolent protest, that the creation of The Voting Rights Act protects African Americans' right to vote. He also played a major part in the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. King had many trials and tribulations for example, In 1956, a bomb was thrown on to the porch of Martin Luther King Jr’s house. Again in 1956, another bomb was thrown onto his porch, luckily, both times the bombs did not explode. In 1956, King was also arrested on charges of hindering operation of buses without legal cause. In 1958, he published a book called 'Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story'. In 1960, King moved to Atlanta with his family and becomes the co-pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, his father’s old church. In 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. was convicted of leading a march in Albany. All the challenges King and his people have gone through has shaped their future, our present day and now it’s our turn to shape our future rather than let it be destroyed.
