Space. A topic that often comes up in government discussions and is ALL over the news. The debate that has been recently going around in meetings and get-togethers, is if we should spend valuable resources on space exploration. So I ask you. Should the U.S. Government spend the taxpayer’s money, and hardworking people’s time on Space Exploration? The answer is yes. The United States of America should spend hard cash on space exploration because the contraptions and tools created out in space can help the Earth in the long run. Also, the exploration of space gets people talking and interesting the youth making them want to spend some of their time in the STEM program. To begin with, a justifying reason why we should use the citizens of America’s money to discover more of space, is the technologies that we can and have created will support the earth. Devices outside the earth have assisted the world for many years such as satellites. Satellites have made it possible for people to access google earth, looking at different countries as an alternative to a map, and on a serious note. Relay messages from country to country during a possible war or dispute. In the article “Would Tupper 2

You Move to Mars”, the author Lauren Tarshis states that “Earth’s climate is changing, and the lessons we learn from farming on Mars could help us fix climate problems on our home planet” (Tarshis 8) The previous text evidence that I just stated with you, is one of many examples of tools out in space contributing to keeping earth a healthy and habitable place.

However, some unenthusiastic scientists assume it will take too long to get to Mars, stating it would cost far too much for the government. While critics may argue that going to Mars would take too long, and we won’t be prepared for when we need to actually go to Mars they are discrediting some programs that NASA has created to conflict with the fault-finders. This claim is very misleading as NASA has introduced the 100 Year Starship Program. Which has a goal to send us to Mars or even another planetary system within the next 100 years or less. In the informative write-up titled “Future of Space Exploration Could See Humans on Mars, Alien Planets”, Nola Taylor Redd tells people about the 100 Year Starship Program. “The 100 Year Starship Program aims to develop the tools and technology necessary in order to build and fly a spaceship to another planetary system in the next 100 years” (Redd 175). This excerpt from the text show the disbelievers that we are trying to get to another planet or even solar system within the next 100 years.

In addition to the technologies out in space helping us on earth, space exploration will certainly introduce and interest the children with STEM program. Presenting space exploration to the children will involve them capturing their interest in

Tupper 3 learning more about space. As these youngsters get older and learn more, they might get jobs with the government contributing to space exploration, possibly discovering something important.

Evidence that space exploration intrigues kids into the STEM program is shown in informative article “Future of U.S. Space Exploration after Curiosity”. Neil DeGrasse Tyson says that “Anything NASA does in space that has never been done before drums up interest in science” (Tyson 206). This quote supports the claim that the investigation of space fascinates the young people with the STEM program because, in that interview, Neil Tyson goes on to say that the Hubble Telescope, Spirit and Opportunity Rovers, and broadcasts from the ISS have interested the youth.

All in all, when the Earth becomes uninhabitable, we won’t have anywhere to live, if we don’t explore space. This is why the people must embrace space exploration. The government must spend the citizens hard earned money on the research of the galaxy. If you want your kids getting smarter, and if you want to make the earth more healthy, then in any discussion. Tell the people why the U.S. Government should spend valuable resources on space exploration.
