America, known as the constitution or federation, is ultimately led by President Donald J. Trump, and as stated by the Constitution of the United States, “All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives” (Baltzell, 2007). Though the American government was designed to keep individuals of a higher power from acquiring excessive amounts of power, many believe the current president of the United States is aiming to turn America into a totalitarian regime. Many have become skeptical of America’s future, questioning if the once free land could become indeed totalitarian.
American president Trump has been found to be continually progressing his country toward a state of totalitarianism. For example, Mr. Trump threatened to prosecute presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, once he became president, just as Woodrow Wilson did, and have restricted press freedoms. Totalitarianism examples are not just found in the current era such as Andrew Jackson’s Native American removal policy, that in today’s terms would be deemed as ethnic cleansing. Trump has been ultimately focusing on himself and his wishes, going as far as to refuse to settle a government shutdown. With Mr. Trump as president, America is surely heading towards a state of totalitarianism.

In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson prosecuted Eugene V. Debs to prison for ten years from delivering an anti-war speech which violated the Espionage Act of 1917. Woodrow Wilson imprisoned any person who disagreed with his opinions where to be imprisoned and punished much like ‘Animal Farm’, an allegorical novel written by George Orwell. The book has a set of animals that have come to own and run a farm by themselves. The pigs in the book take over and create a governing structure, however, only one pig rises to the top. Named Napoleon, this pig executed any animal who confessed contact or alliances with enemies, just like President Wilson, and Trump. President Trump told his council while running for office that he intended to have his political candidate Hillary Clinton, and former FBI Director James Comey prosecuted (Berlatsky). Punishing anyone who could threaten their rise to power, Trump and Wilson prove America is progressing towards totalitarianism.
As mentioned before, totalitarianism has been found not only in the current time, but also in the past. On May 28, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, stating all Cherokee and other Native American tribes were to be moved west. Andrew Jackson needed the land they inhabited to expand his growing country and in return, grow his power. With more land, Mr. Jackson could expand and develop, and gain an immense amount of wealth and power (Library of Congress). Not only is such considered acts of totalitarianism, but also considered ethnic cleansing.
President Trump proposed the idea of building a wall or a barrier between the United States of America and Mexico to prevent illegal immigration. However, in late 2018 and early 2019, Mr. Trump refuses to compromise with the democratic senate regarding his wall, creating a government shutdown. Unwilling to budge, Mr. Trump is only considering his self and his wishes and not the well-being of the country, a clear act of totalitarian, just as mentioned before about Napoleon in ‘Animal Farm’. Napoleon did not let anyone persuade him in building the windmill, even though it failed multiple times. He did not let anyone protest when he began to walk on two legs and did not let anyone rise above his power.
However, many say that the immense population would prevent any sort of president from creating a totalitarian state. Yet no one was able to successfully overthrow Adolf Hitler, a leader of a German totalitarian state. If it has happened in the past, it is plausible to happen in the future. From presidents of old to presidents now, totalitarianism is in Americas near future. Mr. Trump has threatened to imprison his candidate and anyone who might stand in his way. Andrew Jackson a previous president signed a contract of ethnic cleansing, and many other presidents have committed totalitarian crimes. With our current president and past trends, America is undoubtedly headed towards a totalitarian reign.
