Scenario: You and a friend have been working on your final research papers for one of your classes for the past month. The night before the papers are due, you get together for an all-night editing session. At 1 a.m., your friend’s computer dies, and he loses his entire paper. He has no backup disk. Your friend is devastated, and he decides to download a paper from an Internet term paper site. How do you respond to his actions? How would you suggest he solve his problem without cheating?
I would immediately stop him and express my reasons as to why he shouldn’t copy. Plagiarizing someone else's work off the internet is a serious crime, which has many consequences. Since your final research papers are weighted much more than assessments. I would encourage him to not cheat because it is better to get part marks, rather than a zero. This is because not only will he be given a failing mark, but he will also be given a suspension or expulsion, for academic dishonesty. I would suggest that he starts over with what he remembers and that he informs his teacher as soon as possible about his predicament so that he can get a possible extension.

What do you think are the main reasons that students cheat in school?
I believe that there are multiple reasons as to why students are pushed to cheat in school. I think the main reason students prefer to cheat is that they lack the dedication to study or that they follow their peer's example. Students are more motivated to impress their peers and will go as far as cheating. Sometimes some students aren't as smart as their friends and feel like they need to cheat to prove to their friends that they're smart. Students will do whatever it takes, whether it’s using a cheat sheet, phone, or cheating the person beside them. They will do this to create a fake persona around themselves to trick their friends and family into believing they're educated. Students who cheat tend to cheat since it's easy and simple. There are more reasons as to why they cheat, but I believe that students cheat due to who they associate themselves with. All in all, I believe that students cheat because they don't have the dedication to study.
Do you think that some kinds of cheating are worse than others? Explain.
I believe certain types of cheating are worse than others. There are times when students plagiarize an idea off the internet without crediting the author so that they can understand a concept, which is still cheating. On the other hand, I believe that cheating to pass a quiz, test, or final evaluation is worse. This doesn't only affect your knowledge for future evaluations, but if you get caught you will receive a zero. To conclude, I believe some cheating methods are worse than others.
If you were a teacher, how would you punish a student who you caught cheating? If you were a parent, how would you punish a child who was caught cheating at school?
If I were a teacher and caught one of my students cheating, I would immediately give the student a zero and move him/her to the front of the class. By doing this it will embarrass the student for being moved so suddenly. This will also warn any students who tried or are planning to cheat. I will also take their phones during tests and make a seating plan for the class, with multiple variants of the tests so they can’t cheat anymore.
As a parent, I would first ask the teacher what happened. Then I would ask my child why they choose to cheat. After listening to both sides of the story I would tell my child they made a mistake, which made both his/her parents upset. I would also ask him/her if they need any help studying so that I can get a tutor for them. I would advise him not to do this in the future because it will heavily affect his learning skills.
Would you ever report a friend for cheating? Why or why not?
As a friend, I don't think I would report my friend for cheating even though I know it’s academic dishonesty and is unacceptable in today's standards. I would instead warn him that this will affect his future as it will be interfering with learning important concepts and skills. Doing tests allows you to see your weakness, so you can fix it. By cheating it will increase your marks, but you won't be learning anything from it. It’s up to them to still want to cheat, but as a friend, I will help them understand and learn concepts they don't know or want to learn. In conclusion, I will not report my friends for cheating, but instead recommend them to avoid cheating and offer to help them, so they can try to stop cheating.
How much do you think a parent can help a student with their school work before it is considered cheating?
I’d say cheating is when your parents give you the answers. In my opinion, a parent should help their child in the same way a teacher does. Usually, your parents are busy and tend to just give you answers so that you can stop bothering their work. Instead, I think parents should show them how to solve the problem, by giving them examples. Parents should teach their children to comprehend and learn how to use the concepts. By doing this the parents will help them solve future problems.
At what age do you think students start cheating in school? How do you think teachers could deal with this issue early on to keep it from becoming a bigger problem later?
I believe that student starts cheating during their transition year from middle school to high school. Students tend to group with people like them. Being smart, other smart kids will approach you, leaving the struggling students to befriend each other. This will result in peers acting like one another to succeed. As the struggling kids see the smart kids get praised by the teacher for achieving great marks, these students will start to manifest new cheating habits. This is why I believe students start to cheat. This can also apply to earlier grades.
A teacher's way of teaching is straightforward, in which they only reach out to help the students who are smart and ask for help. This results in the struggling kids feeling hopeless as the lessons speed up, leaving them behind. As a result, these students will use underhanded methods to raise their marks to fit with the rest of the class. I believe to prevent cheating from becoming a problem, teachers need to cater to everyone's needs, going in depth in the lessons to ensure that students will be able to learn the concepts to do well in class. During school lunches, teachers can make a study group to help students. Providing students extra learning hours will ensure the student's success. To conclude, students who have the confidence to back their knowledge will be opposed to cheating.
