In this essay I will describe how the works of art -‘Bonheur de Vivre’ by Henry Matisse and' Les Demoiselles d’Avignon' by Pablo Picasso, both were influenced by and how they moved away from the painting ‘The Large Bathers’ by Paul Cezanne. Both Picasso and Matisse were prominent artists. Pablo Picasso primarily delved into the cubism and surrealism (“Art Periods”, 2019). Henry Matisse generally created artworks in the vein of fauvism and modernism (“Henry Matisse”, 2019).

‘The Large Bathers’ by Paul Cezanne is a painting that was created during 1900 – 1906 (“Philadelphia Museum of Art”, n.d.). The painting is comprised of cool hues and large brush strokes. Nude figures lounge under two trees near a pond or small body of water. The painting looks extremely peaceful. Cezanne’s work is said to be post-impressionism, and eventually it lead to cubism as he helped essentially create the movement (“Paul Cezanne Biography”, n.d.).

Paul Cezanne’s ‘The Large Bathers’ inspired Pablo Picasso’s painting ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’, which depicted five naked prostitutes in a brothel. However, the figures in the painting were depicted in flat, disjointed forms, giving them a semi-disfigured appearance, very different from how an idealized female figure would be depicted. Because both were influenced by the rise of cubism, cubism is very prominent in both artworks. While Paul Cezanne used cool tones, Pablo Picasso used cool and warm. They differ in how Pablo Picasso also incorporated surrealism into his painting. The figures are more exaggerated than those in Henry Cezanne’s painting (“Inventing Cubism”, n.d.).

‘Bonheur de Vivre’ by Henry Matisse is inspired by Paul Cezanne’s ‘The Large Bathers’ in many ways. First of all, the compositions of Henry Matisse’s nude figures in his painting are quite like those in Paul Cezanne’s piece. It also resembles ‘The Large Bathers’ in regards to the nude figures beneath two trees with a body of water shortly in the distance. Although, Henry Matisse didn’t use cool hues as his colors were bright and warm and he didn’t use large brushstrokes in this particular piece. However, both paintings reflect the landscape and set a stage for the figures within it (“Henry Matisse, n.d.).

In conclusion, in both pieces by Pablo Picasso and Henry Matisse you can see the heavy influence of Paul Cezanne, who helped pave the way for cubism. Both artists exhibit similarities to his style, as well as differences, which make each piece very unique. Pablo Picasso, Henry Matisse, and Paul Cezanne were all very important and influential painters in their own right.
