Vincent Van Gogh was a very famous painter that still inspires many people today. He was one of the most influential artists in western art. In just over a decade, he created around 2,100 artworks. While Van Gogh seems like a super popular guy, he actually struggled with mental illness and remained poor throughout his life. He was not very famous until after his death, however, he experienced many different things in his life.
Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Brabant, Netherlands. He was the oldest of six children and his dad was a protestant pastor. He grew up in a small village in the Southern Netherlands. Around age 20, he started to work for the government and held a position in London and Paris. Then, he got inspired by artists like Rembrandt. Later, he was rejected by a London girl and became depressed. He went through many different jobs, trying to find what he was good at. For example, he practiced theology and then went into the missions field. However, he got sent back because the church did not like how he was teaching. After, he was frustrated that he was not allowed to talk about what he believed. By being sent home, he started to focus on humanity in art and how whatever you believe in is ok. Then, he became a language teacher. Next, he was a bookseller and sold letters. The letters of Vincent Van Gogh are a collection of 903 surviving letters that he wrote or received. In conclusion, Vincent Van Gogh was a determined man and kept finding ways to do what he loved.
Vincent Van Gogh has many famous artworks that we still love today. For example, The Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh's Self-Portrait, and The Potato Eaters are just a few. It is estimated that he created around 2,000 artworks with around 900 paintings. There is a museum dedicated just to all his paintings in Amsterdam. Also, there is a museum in the Netherlands with some artworks. Most of his most famous paintings were done in his last two years. An interesting fact about Van Gogh is that it is believed he only sold one painting in his lifetime. He became known after his death and all his artworks were discovered. However, Van Gogh did some strange things that we still talk about today. For example, he cut off his ear and mailed it to a protestant woman. It is believed that he got angry with Paul Gaugin, an artist he had been working for. He constantly would hallucinate and lose consciousness. During one of those times, he cut off his left ear. He gave the ear to the girl as a sign of affection. A document also says that he would pass his own tombstone every day. Towards his later years, he began to get depressed and also a little crazy. For example, it is believed that his famous painting Starry Nights is from the viewpoint of an asylum. His artwork started to represent how he acted and felt.
Vincent Van Gogh is an artist that still influences many people for over a century. He is a good example of never giving up. He kept getting fired and moved from job to job. However, he persevered and pursued his interests. Also, even though he was not famous while living, he still painted and kept creating artwork. If Van Gogh was still alive today, he would be amazed at how famous he is to this day. Vincent Van Gogh had a rough life and kept working at doing what he loved, which led him to be an incredible, famous artist.
