I share the same feelings as my friends as we are ready to break out of this bell jar that has protected us from the outside world up until our senior year of high school. I see them being faced with the decision of where to go to college. While they are being met with some of the hardest decisions they’ve ever had to make, I’m going through my struggles. I ask myself, “Is college even in my future?”.

I was born in Mexico and was brought to America by my parents when I was two years old. Mexico is a blur because even though I was born in Mexico, I grew up in Texas and felt like any other kid. I played outside in the playground with my friends, playing video games on my Gamecube, and eat a lot of junk food. I always knew I was undocumented, but as a little kid, it never faced me.

My biggest concern back then was if my mom was going to allow me to go to the park to play with my friends. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized how serious my situation was. I’m a senior in high school and I’m currently applying for college. Being an undocumented student with DACA status has made my process of applying to college different from that of my peers. DACA is a policy that allows students who were brought to the United States illegally as kids to obtain work permits and pay in-state tuition at some universities. It serves many benefits, but I still don’t have access to many resources such as federal financial aid or most scholarships. For instance, I had to use TAFSA, the financial aid application for undocumented and DACA students living in Texas.

My status also interferes with scholarships only offered to citizens although I might be me more qualified. I will also be sending proof of being a Texas resident to every school I apply for so I can qualify for in-state tuition. As challenging as my college process will be, I acknowledge that I have many privileges as a student with DACA status living in Texas because other DACA students in other states don’t qualify for the benefits that I receive such as not being able to receive state financial aid. They have to gather the money on their own. What matters to me the most are opportunities. Opportunities are a set of circumstances that make it possible to do something. As an undocumented immigrant, I know the struggle. The struggle of knowing I’m going to have to work ten times harder than my peers. Over one million undocumented students in America are unable to go to university due to circumstances out of their control. I don’t want to add more to our statistics. My American dream will not end in 12th grade. Instead of worrying about what I cannot control, I’m shifting my energy to what I can create with the opportunities given to me.
